Applications, donations being accepted for Holiday Project
With the holiday season quickly approaching, plans are well underway for the annual Saline County Holiday Project. Important dates regarding the project, as well as other important information, was discussed at a meeting at the Salt Fork YMCA on Oct. 8.
The Holiday Project is a way to provide for families in need during the holiday season. Selected families will have the opportunity to "shop" for children's Christmas gifts, as well as food and paper products donated by the community. The project is operated by volunteers who organize the goods at Martin Community Center and shop with families.
Set up days for the project will be Dec. 8-9 and the project will be Dec. 10. Shift times for families on Dec. 10 will be at 8 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
Applications for families will be accepted Nov. 2-25. Applications can be picked up at the Missouri Valley Community Action Agency, at 153 S. Odell Ave., and at the YMCA, located at 740 E. Yerby St.
Invitations will be sent to the selected families on Nov. 30 and will include each family's shift time. Families will need to bring their invitations with them the day of the event.
Donations for the project can be turned in Dec. 8-9. Items that the project needs include: canned or dried fruit, canned vegetables, canned or dried soups and broths, canned pasta, canned meats and fish, peanut butter, meals in a box or package, macaroni and cheese, pasta and noodles, rice, instant ramen noodles, flour, sugar, JELL-O and pudding mixes, canned beans, canned and dried potato mixes, saltine crackers, cereal, baking mixes, bread and cornbread, other baking supplies and paper products such as toilet paper, paper towels and tissues.
Checks can be made payable to Saline County Holiday Project and mailed to Tower Realty at 254 S. Odell Ave.
Another meeting will be held Nov. 10 at the YMCA to further discuss the Holiday Project.
