MDN welcomes new publisher
A new publisher has joined The Marshall Democrat-News team, and with him comes 42 years of experience in the newspaper business.
Randy E. List was introduced to the staff this past August prior to moving to Marshall. He began duties Monday, Aug. 31.
List is not only settling into his role at MDN, he and his family are settling into the community, as well. His wife, Kathleen, works for Edward Jones, and their daughter, Katie, is a senior at Marshall High School.
"We have only been here a week, but it already feels like home," List said. "My wife and I were happy when presented with the opportunity to move to Marshall. I started hearing about this community and newspaper 18 years ago when I first met my dear friend and former publisher Shelly Arth."
While List is new to MDN, he has been with its parent company -- Rust Communications, which is based in Cape Girardeau -- for 18 years. He is a regional vice president for Rust and supervises three properties in Indiana, six in Iowa -- the state from which he moved -- one in Nebraska and one in Idaho. His first role in the newspaper business was in his hometown of Yankton, S.D.
"I know how important the local newspaper should be in your community," List stated. "I pledge to the community to make it a paper that you feel you need to read."
MDN staff members are embracing the change, saying they're enthusiastic to have List on board.
"We are really excited that Randy and his family have chosen to come to Marshall," News Editor Sarah Reed said. "I'm looking forward to learning from him, and I know the staff is eager to see where his guidance takes us."
List said he wants the community to know he has an open-door policy, that he will always be accessible for comments or inquiries.
"I guarantee that when you walk in the paper or call on the phone, you will always have access to me," he said. "I want to hear the good, bad and the ugly so that I have an opportunity to improve your newspaper."
