Sidewalk Sale brings shoppers downtown
The annual Marshall Chamber of Commerce Sidewalk Sale brought shoppers to the city square Friday morning, Aug. 7.
The sale takes place Aug. 7-8 and features door prizes of $25, $50 or $75 chamber bucks to be awarded Tuesday, Aug. 11. Shoppers can enter for the giveaways at 15 different chamber of commerce members, 10 of which are located in the vicinity of the downtown square. One entry can be completed for each business visited during the sale.
Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Jill Murray said there were "a ton" of entries in last years giveaway, where shoppers making a purchase of $20 or more received an extra entry. However, this year, the giveaway returned to the previous system of one entry per business visited.
Murray said all Marshall businesses were welcome to take part in the sale.
"We encouraged them to participate, whether they were a chamber member or not, because it benefits all of us," Murray said.
Jerry Hedrick of Jerry's Mens Wear & Lin's Fashions said it was good to give people an incentive to get out and shop around the square. He said having the event spread over two days and fewer retail businesses on the square than in years past had reduced the amount of shoppers at any given time.
"It used to be a big deal back when you had 20 or so retail stores on the square," Hedrick said. "Now you only have [a few]."
The event coincides with Missouri's back to school sales tax holiday. This allows shoppers to take advantage of the sale and then pay for items such as clothing and school supplies tax free.
"A lot of people come out and do their back to school shopping," Tom Nenadal of Back from the Past Bicycles said. "They wouldn't ordinarily shop for that on the square."
Nenadal said the bike shop was beating the heat by having their sidewalk sale indoors.
