Treasurer Marty Smith reports good figures for Saline County taxes

Treasurer Marty Smith attended the Saline County Commission meeting Tuesday, July 8, to report good figures and sizable increases for all taxes in the county for the month of July.

The sales tax for the month of July is at $115,378.11, an increase from last month's total of $101,429.18 and July 2013's total of $89,153. The law enforcement tax for the month is $86,533.03, an increase from last month's total of $76,073.25 and July 2013's total of $66,864.01. The courthouse tax for the month is $60,536.68, an increase from last month's total of $54,250.10 and July 2013's total of $45,903.77. The use tax for the month is at $30,120.71, an increase from last month's total of $14,238.25 and July 2013's total of $23,443.03.

Southern Commissioner Monte Fenner announced commission has received the contracts for construction of bridge No. 50 in the Grand Pass Special Road District, which is in the western part of the county over at Salt Fork.

"We received contracts from MoDOT," Fenner said. "We need to take this through session, agree to sign these contracts, keep one copy and send eight copies back to MoDOT in Lee's Summit."

The commission accepted the contracts.

Fenner also updated commission about the progress on bridge No. 47 and he said the old bridge has been removed.

"It looked to me like they were getting ready to start sometime this week putting in the forums to start pouring concrete, maybe by next week hopefully," Fenner said. "The project looked good, they were there doing a good job."

Northern Commissioner Charlie Guthrie reported the real estate personal property added and abatements showed a net gain of $4,743.08.

County Clerk Debbie Russell announced the county clerk's office is accepting absentee voting now and that there is also a new process handling military ballots.

"We're set for this upcoming election," Russell said.

The commission also approved liquor licenses for The Pop Shop stores in Marshall.
