County committee nomination period now open

FSA is currently accepting nomination for the upcoming County Committee election. In Saline County, this year's election will be held in Area 1 which includes the townships of Arrow Rock, Cambridge, Clay and Salt Fork. The area is currently represented by Loyd French.

To be eligible to serve on an FSA county committee, a person must participate or cooperate in a program administered by FSA, be eligible to vote in a county committee election and reside in the local administrative area where the person is nominated.

You may nominate yourself or someone else.

Nomination must be submitted on form FSA-669A which is available on FSAs website or at the local county office.

Nomination forms must be postmarked or received in the local county office no later than August. FSA will mail ballots to eligible voters beginning November 3. Newly elected committee members and alternates take office on January 1.

Conservation Reserve Program reminders

One-year extensions have been offered to certain general CRP contracts scheduled to expire this September. If your contract is eligible, you should have received a letter regarding the extension. To take advantage of the extension, all participants must sign the extension no later than August 8.

We are currently accepting enrollment of continuous CRP practices. Enrollment ends September 30.

Lastly, we are currently in the primary nesting season which runs from May 1 through July 15 each year. No maintenance or management activities can occur during this time.

Crop reporting

July 15 is the deadline to report your corn, soybean, and CRP acres.

Walk-ins are welcome, if you don't mind waiting a bit. Otherwise, call for an appointment, which can help make the process go faster.

Livestock Disaster Program sign-up still underway

We are still accepting applications for the livestock disaster programs authorized by the new farm bill, including the Livestock Forage Program (LFP).

LFP provides compensation for pasture losses. Producers in Saline County are eligible for payments in 2012 and 2013.

It can take a while to work through the application, so we encourage you to call ahead for an appointment.
