Sweet Springs BOE approves 2014-2015 calendar, salaries

Friday, March 14, 2014

A calendar for the 2014-2015 school year was approved at the Sweet Springs Board of Education meeting Thursday night, March 13.

The board had a choice between three calendars, and went with the option that received the most votes from the staff.

School will start on Thursday, Aug. 14, and end on Tuesday, May 19, 2015. The pre-schedule make-up days are Jan. 19, April 2, April 7, Feb. 16, May 20 and May 21.

The board also approved allowing current staff to move up a step on the salary schedule for the 2014-2015 school year. Superintendent Donna Wright noted the board would be looking at salary contracts in closed session after the meeting.

"It would cost the district approximately $29,638," Wright said, noting the figure was dependent on who stays and who leaves.

Beth Perkins and Lewis Bybee were in attendance to speak against Common Core State Standards. Each expressed their concern about education being taken over by the federal government and noted "your children are not common."

Perkins provided several dates, stating she believed Common Core has been "in the planning and implementing stages for many years." She said she knew the board could not opt out of Common Core, but urged the board to contact representatives about the issue.

Bybee spoke along the same lines. He said Common Core takes away the teacher's ability to be innovative when it comes to teaching practices.

"We have to consider our children first and return the control back over to our school board," he said. "... Our children are not common and they do not belong to the state."

The board approved the consent agenda items, which included the minutes of the previous meeting, the financial report, a second reading for board policy revisions, the student council state convention agenda and the senior budget.

The next regular meeting will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 10.
