County clerk discusses upcoming elections
County Clerk Debbie Russell had several election-related updates for Saline County Commissioners at the Tuesday, Feb. 11, meeting.
"Several of the county offices are up for re-election this year," she said.
Filing dates for the primary election are Feb. 25 through March 25, and Russell asked that anyone interested in running contact her anonymously at 660-886-9050 to ask questions about the filing process. Due to legal changes in regards to bonding being required for some positions, Russell noted she would like to share some information with interested candidates to avoid any hang-ups during the filing process.
"The Secretary of State has ruled that the county clerk's office and all county clerk's have to canvas every other year, and we're in the process of doing that right now," Russell said. "The purpose of that canvas is to update any records or address changes on any registered voters who have changed addresses but not notified our office."
Russell asked that county residents respond to the correspondence from the county clerk's office so their records can be updated. She also noted the canvas is being paid for with a grant from the state and grants allowed them to purchase 10,000 voter registration cards.
Russell also said the last day to register to vote in the April election is March 12.
The tax collection for Feb. 2014 has been reported. The sales tax collected for that month was $87,148.44, which is $8,554.15 higher than the same month in 2013. The law enforcement tax collected in February of this year was $65,359.84, and in the same month in 2013 $58,945.23 was collected. The court house tax collected $44,921.75 in Feb. 2014, and in Feb. 2013 it collected $39,512.97. The use tax collected was the highest amount to date, coming in at $46,090.02, compared to the $14,367.02 of January of this year.
The commissioners approved the minutes of two previous meetings, a pre-approved payment schedule, budget amendments and collectors fees.
The next regular meeting of the Saline County Commission will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18.
