  • Can anyone explain specific differences between the Tea Party agenda versus the Libertarian Party? Who on this blog feels they identify with either of those parties, and which one? More specifically, I'd like to ask each of you to state which party you most identify with and if applicable, which wing. I know many will claim to be independent, but which party are you closest to identifying with? I definitely identify with the progressive wing of the Democratic party.

  • The ACA is the right direction. Single payer is the ultimate answer, but not penalizing pre-existing conditions and insuring millions of more that are currently not insured is also the moral thing to do. Nobody thinks government is efficient, but doing the right thing has worked for Social Security and Medicare, and doing what it takes to fully fund them all via fair taxes is where the debate should be. Forcing younger and healthier individuals to get healthcare was a Republican ides that was also the right thing, except it now goes against their mantra to always be against whatever Obama is for. Being against all taxation to do the right thing is the wrong thing.

  • Smart Dog you definitely are more bite than bark. Very well said! Of course by the end of your first sentence the selective Right went into optional brain lock and never heard another word. They remember nothing of the bad old days of baby Bush and puppet master Cheney.

Their eight years treading the yellow brick road; one with no heart, one with no brain, and neither with courage has left all of us stranded in some especially sick version of OZ.

  • Trey Radel, Repubican Congressman from Florida was busted on a cocaine charge. He voted for drug testing food stamp recipients. If he is not a hypocrite he should renounce his many congressionally afforded welfare benefits. • Even though I agree that GW was possibly the worst President in history, and I detested most everything he did, AND I am definitely a progressive liberal, I always felt that he was unjustly criticized for his "Mission Accomplished" carrier speech. At that time, I agreed to running Hussein back to Bagdad and wiping out their military. I was for that action. And, when we did that I also felt "Mission Accomplished" was a true statement. We should have stopped and withdrew, in hind sight, and had we done so, I believe Mission Accomplished would have been true.

  • AND, Iraq deserved to have their butt kicked, and we did have a decent coalition that agreed to go along. He thwarted every effort for inspection and kept crossing every line we would draw in the sand. He sure acted like he had a lot to hide. This liberal remembers his feelings at that moment, and feel that taking him out was warranted, whether we found WMD's or not at that point. He was the bully that kept pushing and daring until WE couldn't take it any longer. Our only problem was that we decided to "police" the state. I think that is the major lesson we should take away from that terrible experience. I am a liberal, but not a pacifist. Again, that does not take away from the fact that I was ashamed of GW as our President and feel that he is the one responsible for ALL the decisions that took us down the road to our recession we are still unburying ourselves even today.

  • Iraq? Oil, blood and sand made a monstrous mosaic.

It is ironic that we removed Iraq's Dictator who was a toothless tiger, and caused the slaughter of more people than he ever could have. A half million Iraquis are dead from the violence we precipitated, a thousand more a month are still dying from the violence. We destroyed the infrastructure of the nation. Birth defects are overwhelming there from the toxic environment that we left behind.

We attacked and removed one whom we proclaimed a Devil, and left a hell on earth for an innocent populis. I can not find that morally justifiable under any circumstances.

The Bush Administration made the greatest foreign policy blunder in American history. There are many more reasons why the Iraq War was wrong in conception, and administration.

I tire of opposing that moral repugnacy after over a decade of doing so. I will let others oppose the ongoing revisionism. I could not disagree with you more Rational Thinker.

  • OKR, I agree with you AFTER our actions following the storming to Baghdad, which is when the vast majority of all the horrific numbers you accurately point out. We pretty much removed his teeth once we made it to Baghdad, and that is where we should have withdrawn and stayed away from trying to police the state. He probably would have arisen again, but perhaps the people would have prevented that. He was the one killing his own people and invading other countries up to that point. Do you believe the world should have allowed him to occupy Kuwait? Do you agree that pushing him back to Baghdad was the right thing to do?

We are all about covering up our messes instead of eradicating them.

  • We have two states side, by side with similar heritages. One has left its progressive roots and gone far right. The other has continued its progressive tradition. It is a slam dunk as to which is doing better. Stuff this in your pie holes GOTP members. Wait, maybe you better take a Tums before you read it at the link because this truth is going to upset your belly in a way that no amount of tepid Tea party swill can sooth. I hope some of you have the gut stregth to read it, maybe even comment, but I'm not holding my breath until that happens.

"Right Vs. Left In The Midwest"

"MINNESOTA and Wisconsin share much more than bone-chilling winters: German and Northern European roots; farming; and, until recently, a populist progressive tradition stretching back a century to Wisconsin's Fighting Bob La Follette and the birth of Minnesota's Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party.

But in 2010 these cousin states diverged. By doing so they began a natural experiment that compares the agendas of modern progressivism and the new right. Wisconsin elected Republicans to majorities in the Legislature and selected a bold and vigorous Republican governor, Scott Walker. Minnesotans elected one of the most progressive candidates for governor in the country, Mark Dayton of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party."

  • The article would have been better if it would have provided base figures, for example showing where did MN and WI rank in 2004.

Playing Devil's advocate for a moment; Oklahoma was rated the 14th best state to do business by Forbes, close to MN's 8th.States don't get further to the right than Oklahoma.

Still that does not spoil the Minnesota/Wisconsin example. They are so similar in many ways that it would be hard to find two other like states for a more meaningful comparison of the influence of political system differences.

  • We really need to take back the House, or we are going to be stuck in limbo and not getting anything done or fixed for quite some time. On the flip side, I really hate to imagine what would happen if the GOP takes back the Senate along with the house, and heaven forbid, the Presidency, especially if they keep kowtowing to the Tea Party types.

-- Posted by RationalThinker on Fri, Dec 6, 2013, at 3:34 AM
  • SD the simulated tracking of Santa on his flight being accompanied by F-35 aircraft to protect him is sick. However I admit that it is historic in that it is likely to be the first untroubled flight by the star crossed F-35 aircraft. Costs when all is said and done will far exceed a trillion dollars by the time this clunker leaves the air for the last time. All bets are off as to whether that will be a falling or a landing. If NORAD wanted to do a truly realistic simulation they would somewhere along the Eve's magical path show Santa rescuing a pilot, pulling him safely into his sleigh as the F-35 fell from the sky like a gold brick.

Even more worrisome is how will our monsterous military industry take advantage of other fictions that are dear to children. Certainly there is an opportunity here for them to have protective drones accompany the easter bunny on his rounds, laying an occasional egg as the bunny delivers his.

  • SD, I agree the GOTP will successfully scramble to hold and in some cases, temporarily gain power, but in the longer run they've hurt themselves badly by alienating many of their rational base, those who only care about paying as you go, the true fiscal conservative without the right wing social agendas. Their atrocious actions on restricting voting hours, reducing voting locations, and requiring special Id's, along with all their restrictive push with social agendas will only energize a growing base that detests the "old, white, cranky, and downright mean spirited" GOTP of today. They may have lost the Presidency for some time to come as the people have shown they will stand in line a long time (and multiple times :-) in spite of their efforts. Eventually the wave of disrespect they are deservedly thrusting on themselves will have the opposite effect of their misguided intentions.

We have seen that with this regime on a daily basis but some seem to think they have our best interests in mind. Idiots! How many lies does it take to make a person unbelievable? I guess that is unlimited.

    -- Posted by rr3yv0 on Sun, Dec 8, 2013, at 4:23 PM
  • "This regime is paying more respect for a dead black communist... -rr3

That is a racist statement rr3. I am sure you don't believe that because you don't understand why it is a racist statement. Let me explain.

Your point was that we should not be giving so much respect to an individual. You used two adjectives black and communist to describe the individual. You used no other terms to describe Mandela inferring that your reasons for disapproval of the individual were that he was black and that he was a communist.

If your reasons were only political you might have said for instance, "This regime is paying more respect for a dead terrorist communist...". Why was it important to you to use the word black? It certainly did nothing to define the political reason that you choose to express your scorn at the world's mourning of Mandela.

If you bother to reply you may choose to defend yourself by saying I wanted everyone to know that I was talking about Mandela. That is the reason people have names rr3. Such a retort would be nothing more than a flimsy excuse to cover what in my opinion is blatant racism.

I will give you that it may have originated on a subconscious level in your mind, and that you thought nothing of it as you pecked away at the key board. I recommend self examination rr3 instead of self defense of your racist slip.

By the way what do you think of that dead white communist Stalin, or that dead yellow communist Mao? See what I mean?

-- Posted by Oklahoma Reader on Mon, Dec 9, 2013, at 12:58 AM
  • rr3: I see you haven't changed! Mandela was a Hero to mankind, in my opinion, i don't care what color you are. For someone to take on the Establishment, for unjust treatment,is a Hero, in my mind. Okla, News, Nana, Slater and the rest of my friends on here , HAPPY HOLIDAYS

  • There will also be those that think that Obama is a hero when he is dead and gone. The truth will be known but denied by the followers(low information). I would like to challenge any of the libs out there to give me a reason to believe anything that Obama says. The amazing thing is that he has lied to you and me. When someone lies they lose all credibility as a leader, not that he ever was one. Our credibility with the world has been damaged maybe beyond repair and libs still defend him. The truth is that during his upbringing he was surrounded by communist and terrorists, so now tell me he loves America. In fact he has libs(low information) believing capitalism is evil, corporations are evil, the rich are evil and they believe it. He portrays himself as fighting against the havoc that his policies are causing. He should be impeached for lying to the American people but the libs will never have the courage to do it because they paint anyone that is against him as racist just like some on here like to call me.

At least if they attack me personally they have no argument because personal attack is all they have because they stand for a lie and policies that have never worked and never will.

It would be easy for me to say "I told you so" but hey "I told you so".

All the Years they were in Office, they were the Champions of being liars You know i've been thinking about President Obama, and what he has done for this Country with the Party of (NO) Pulling every tactic in the Book to do him in,and was still able to stop another depression, and did it! The Republican's left a mess! With the Lives of a lot of Hero's! Think of what he could have accomplished with the Rep. help. And still could. He's right up there with Roosevelt, maybe better! Roosevelt had help from most of the other Politician's! He not Perfect, better than anything we've had in awhile.he does have Character. It'S THE SYSTEM and the way it can be manipulated .I don't think any of it will work for the People, until this happens! Sorry okla didn't think. Everyone should keep in touch,i agree! You have tried to shift the topic to Obama (which gives insight as to why you hate him so much as well). Recognition of a problem is the first step toward healing.

It is hard to believe that he is real, but then it is hard to believe his supporters are real. Surreal is more descriptive in both cases.

  • It's really funny how liberalism always has to attack an opponents character instead of having a straight up debate on the issues. As you can read about how I am a racist and about how good their argument is on about why I am. Others have to bring up how bad they thought Bush/Cheney was so they justify the actions of Obama. I just have to laugh at the low information crowd.

They have been fighting the war on poverty since 1964 and poverty is worse then ever under Obama. Does that mean that liberalism has failed? If there is a war we should pull out of it is that one. We have the top 40% of taxpayers paying 106% of the tax burden while the bottom 40% have a negative tax burden and this comes from the CBO.

The income gap has widened under Obama despite all his liberal redistribution efforts. Redistribution has never worked. We have about 1 in 7 Americans enrolled in food stamps compared to 1 in 50 in the 70's. How is that successful?

We have on of the longest runs of high unemployment in American history and it doesn't even include the millions that are no longer in the workforce. How has this economy been in anything that can be considered a recovery in the last five years. Low information voters would say it has because that is all they hear from their media.

Liberal policies have destroyed the family unit especially among blacks. My daughter is black and people ask her why she doesn't act black. How are blacks supposed to act? Stupid I guess, how do you answer that?

Why is it that Christianity is the religion always under attack by liberals, why not Atheism, Mormonism, Islam, or Wiccans. The nativity is attacked, the cross is attacked and usually by liberal activist groups that are supposed to stand up for a person's civil rights.

Under Obamacare those that can pay will being forced to pay for others. So why is someone's reproductive system 0% my business but is 100% my financial responsibility?

We have a crazy person shoot up a place and the first thing liberals want is to restrict the legal possession of firearms and ignore any existing laws that were broken while committing the crime. Why do the majority of these crimes occur in gun free zones?

Now we have a president that support the Muslim brotherhood but cannot protect Americans abroad. Why do liberals always want to apologize for America and our enemies still hate us?

We have dumbed down America with our public school system that refuses to give you any other choice. The way Americans vote proves that. If any other president would have done the the things illegal and unconstitutional he would be impeached but it probably won't happen because he is black. Liberals have played the race card so much they can't bring themselves to do justice for the American people so why is that not racist?

That is not true rr3 once again you miss the point (I suppose you believe even that a personal attack).

Jo got it right. So did Maureen Dowd in her commentary published in today's New York Times. "People who advance controversial notions should be prepared for controversy." "All quarrels are not petty. Sometimes quarrels are about big things, and it is an actual privelege to take a side in them." http://www.nytimes.com/2013/12/15/opinion/sunday/dowd-bigger-than-bambi.html?ref...

So don't bring your "poor me they are attacking me again junk to these blogs". If your ideas are illogical, unsupported, and controversial rational folks are going to say so. Rational folk are going to deride such preposterous statements as "most gay people don't live past fifty". That opinion is intellectually unsupportable and in my opinion homophobic. So, yes I rationally called your opinion preposterous. Deal with it, and quit whining.

Proposed Photo ID constitutional amendment and photo ID legislation have been pre-filed in the MO legislature. The Session begins in January.

HB 1073 [1] - requires a person to submit a specified form of photo identification in order to vote in a public election with specified exemptions.

SB 511 [2] - establishes photo identification requirements for voting.

SJR 31 [3] - Upon voter approval, this constitutional amendment provides that a voter seeking to vote in person may be required by general law to identify himself or herself as a United States citizen and a resident of the state by producing valid, government-issued photo identification.

Actually this bill is another attempt by the Regressive Party to make it harder to vote for those whom they concieve (blacks)are opposed to their mission. I'm thinking that they better be careful as to what they wish for.

There are also many old people, many redneck white folks, and others who are ill prepared for stringent voter I. D. Laws. Would it not be ironic justice if the rest home and red neck voters were hampered in some locales to the point that election was denied to some Tea Party Twits?

Shame on you. Except for this one example; "Missouri Legislature" and "logic" do not belong in the same sentence.

Not sure about the proposed Missouri law, but at least a few of the other states that have passed this do not charge for the voter I.D.

    That point is worth pursuing.

I expect, given the brouhaha over the color of Santa Claus, the legislature's next move will be to have an official state Santa Claus.

Any bets on what color they'll make him?

Why do they always attack Christianity but promote tolerance of Atheism, Islam, etc.? I guess the biggest question is why do people believe them when they obviously lie and spin everything to advance there own agenda?

They will stop at nothing to force their agenda on others. They won't debate facts because facts and the truth are never in their favor. So why all the lies? Is it because they deny God? We see what happens in societies where God it not allowed, millions of people die at the hands of the ruling class.

What do we see here in America? Our president is number one at one thing, lying to the people, us: the people he was supposed to protect and unwilling to uphold the constitution he was sworn too. We have a president willing to spy on us, listen to our conversations, expose our personal information but has spent millions to keep his personal information sealed. He tells us that "you can keep your plan if you like it", "you can keep your doctor if you like them", but when we find out that is not true he insults every American's intelligence by telling us that we were too stupid to understand what he really meant. We hear that the IRS are still targeting conservatives and religious groups but we don't hear it from the media. We tell a liberal that then they call us idiots, who is the real idiot here?

Our president would rather support the terrorism and murders of the Muslim brotherhood then our allies or even American citizens. Then liberals want to blame it on Bush. Let me get this straight who it the idiot? A Muslim beheads two Coptic Christians in New Jersey, a Muslim walks into a church and kills his father while praising Allah in Ohio, these two instances we hardly heard anything about. We did hear about the Boston bombing but the reluctance the relate any of this to Islam is ridiculous. Didn't we hear they might have been Christian before the media finally had to report the truth? Yet liberals will try to convince you that Christianity is the problem. Who is the idiot again?

I guess if you can believe that liberalism is loving and tolerant then you can believe that Islam is a religion of peace. More lies, lies upon lies, without God what is the truth? An opinion that's it and subject to change depending on the liberals agenda. There is no sin without God, it is ok to be gay, it is ok to murder babies for convenience, it is ok to attack a persons character because of an agenda, and it is ok to to lie to the American people to pass a law nobody wants, raises taxes on everybody and destroys a healthcare system that was actually pretty good but will make it worse for everyone. I would just like to ask again, who is the idiot?

  • rr3 I think you are confusing liberal policy with center right policy regarding health care. I am a liberal. At no time was what came out of governmental negotiation (Obamacare) what I advocated. Nor did any other progressive/populist that I know of. We are in favor of the successful single payer coverage enjoyed by most advanced nations; always were, still are. Don't blame liberals for Obamacare. It passed Congress because it was supported by a coalition of Democrats, REPUBLICANS, and assorted business interests. Learn that if you learn nothing else this week. ONCE AGAIN! I AM A LIBERAL. I DID NOT FAVOR OBAMACARE. HAVE YOU GOT THAT?

I am not at the moment going to address other flawed statements in your last long comment. I will wait until you acknowlege this one before going to the next.

-- Posted by Oklahoma Reader on Thu, Dec 19, 2013, at 12:53 AM
  • I erred in my last statement. No Republicans voted for the final version of the ACA.

That does not change the fact that it was not favored by true liberals who overwhelmingly support single payer coverage. Some of them voted for it because it was a start to much needed reform, and the ACA was the only viable beginning on the table. It still needs much work.

If the Republicans have a better idea that can win the support of the people they should promote it. They don't come off very well sitting on their hands griping about what is, and advocating return to the mess of what was; that being a system with which the American people have been fed up with for twenty five years, or more.

They sat on their hands ignoring the problem in the Reagan years, then the Bush SR. years. They sabotaged the Clinton effort to reform health care. They then ignored the festering problem for eight more years of the Baby Bush Administration.

Do something. Just Say No has not worked on drug policy, reduction of teen pregnancy, and it won't work to make health care better. The Party of No needs to go in my opinion; either to work, or away.

  • Smart Dog,

Well put, and I agree with everything that you said.

His opinion was not aired on the show, it was in an interview.

Also, right or wrong, it was his opinion.

GLAAD is actually receiving some backlash over their knee-jerk reaction; and that is appropriate as well.

The vocal minority gets a lot done by screaming at every supposed foul, until slowly, they begin to abuse the privilege.

I am all about equality, but when it affects a person's right to voice his own opinion, that's where I draw the line.

If members of a minority wish to state their opinions, I am all for it.

Therefore, when someone in the majority chooses to do so; they ought to have equal standing.

I do not watch Duck Dynasty, and if it goes off the air,I won't miss it; but I'll miss the loss of individual rights that it takes with it.

  • Good comments, Interested & SD. Gotta wonder, though, if Robertson really represents majority opinion. Do you think, Interested, that blacks were perfectly happy in Louisiana under Jim Crow, and that homosexuality is the same as (or possibly the cause of) bestiality, adultery, idolatry, prostitution (only male, though), greed, slander and fraud? I doubt that you do.

When you talk about majority opinion, I think you may be talking about Robertson's professed Christianity. That's certainly majority, I'll grant you, but the loud response to Phil's comments isn't because he believes in Christ, it's because of what he said about gays and blacks, and the fact that he uses Christianity to defend what he said. I don't even think the majority of Christians agree with him on that. Many may feel that homosexuality doesn't fit with their Christianity, but that bestiality, greed, slander and fraud radiate from it? I doubt there's a majority there - and I think A&E agrees. That's why they suspended Robertson. They think the majority doesn't agree and it will make them (A&E) look bad and make less money. Polling doesn't even show a majority for criminalizing gay marriage any more - so calling Phil's opinion's majority view just isn't so, and it matters because people think it's more wrong for the majority to be unable to express their opinion than for a minority to suffer the same fate. Phil doesn't speak for the American majority.

I'm also kind of tired of all this defense of him. If we're going to talk about sinners, why are gays the focus? Greed was in Phil's list, too. It was money changers who Jesus threw out of the temple, not homosexuals. Why isn't Robertson ranting about the way the banks sold people substandard mortgages and then took their houses - in many cases without producing the paperwork to prove their claims? Why isn't he exercised about rich companies paying less than a living wage? Because he thinks homosexuality is worse than greed. That, of course, goes into what he said, not his right to say it, but what about my right (and GLADD's) to say he's completely missed the point? Is there something wrong about that?

SD, would you tell Robertson, as a fan, that you wish he'd stick to humor & keep his bigotry to himself? That would probably get through the best - and maybe make him consider that he might lose some fans and make less money if he wants to claim these ideas.

It was hard enough when those of us who wanted to talk were a little area on the bottom of the main page. Now you have to be looking for a discussion in order to find it - there's no way you can just come across it.

I also want to add a voice to the complaint about comments on Letters to the Editor. Why would that be restricted? It's obviously a button you turn on or off. Why should it be off?

Santa's factory is troubled at the North Pole.

His economic model at last has taken a toll.

The old fellow finally has the temerity to confess,

even in Red states his elves couldn't make less.

No incentive, no merriment, an absence of wages,

slave labor has been Santa's way for all of the ages.

As Santa is wealthy, and the elves are all broke

he has joined forces with the good brothers Koch.

They endorse his economic model as the best one,

and believe they can sell it as unions are done.

Santa is changing to whom and what he delivers

in a way that should give every child shivers.

Sleigh loaded with rubies, diamonds and gold,

there's also a new list this year I've been told,

a customer list of those to whom Tiffany sold.

As it is sure to anger every urchin and waif

precautions will be taken to keep Santa safe.

As TV follows Santa's trek through the skies,

war planes will escort him wherever he flies.

NORAD has said that it will do just that,

scaring off any nasty revenge seeking brat.

Though they may hear ere he flies out of sight

"frugal Christmas to most we've shifted far right".

The People in Washington knows Single Payer works, but they would do anything to stop it, Why is that? What reason is there, other than the Economy? I lost the use of my Shoulder because of this sillyness! Red Tape and just NO ONE caring, in an Emergency! It has shown me that my Country don't care about any of us! There has to be a way to stop this buying of our Country. Look at the KOCH Brother's and other's! Can we really let this go on? Obama better take a look at this kind of thing? And find Holder wherever he is, and get him to work on something important?

-- Posted by Jo on Mon, Dec 23, 2013, at 10:54 PM
  • You're right about single payer, Jo. I think we didn't get it because the insurance industry was going to spend zillions to make sure it didn't happen because they're making more than zillions the way it is.

I'm so sorry about your shoulder. Its ridiculous and horrible that you wouldn't be able to get the care you need here in the US. But Vermont is trying to launch its own single payer system. And if it works, more people around the country will want it, too.

And there are people working on it in MO. There's an organization in Mexico called GRO (Grass Roots Organizing, 573.581.9595, that's part of a national group called National Peoples Action). A bill was introduced in 2012 by MO House Rep. Michael Brown (D-Kansas City) for state-wide universal care: HB 1405. I don't know what happened with it in 2013, (or how your Rep, Dean Dohrman stood on it. He's an R., I'll guess NO. Ask HIS office why you don't have adequate health care - phone: 573-751-2204, email: Dean.Dohrman@house.mo.gov - or go see him. Take friends.) Maybe you can push it through in 2014.

Aside from that, you probably know that the Koch Brothers own Georgia-Pacific, the paper company. Every time one of us buys Brawny paper towels or Dixie cups, the profit goes to the Kochs and they get richer. The US gov. bought over $51 million worth of toiletry paper products from Koch Industries in 2012 http://usaspending.gov/index.php?q=node%2F3&productorservicecode=8540&psc_name=T... (click the "Prime Awardee" tab). I think there are a lot of us who should be mad about that. Here's a site with videos about money in politics and a campaign with flyers to hand out about Koch products outside stores that carry Georgia Pacific: http://www.bigapplecoffeeparty.org/ (flyer download button on right side of page under Don't Do Koch campaign).

Obama isn't going to give us anything we don't make him give us. It's still the squeaky wheel that gets the grease - and without the $'s that squeak has to be really, really loud.

Anyway, Happy Holidays. Maybe 2014 will see us move toward our own interests. I hope so.

That IS the point indeed. And that is why our Bill of Rights and constitution is so much better than any ridiculous parables from ANY holy book. Our laws are guided by our collective morals, even though they are a continuous work in progress, needing tweaks as societal norms and science continue to evolve toward what we believe is "moral". Those holy books don't have to be changed because they are totally up to interpretation, which are of no more value than the daily horoscope

I am very conservative in the use of my ammunition if I don't have a clear shot.

I will however use ammunition liberally in a target rich environment.

If i am running low of funds, i tend to not bother with the comic books, conserving my cash for more important things

If i have extra funds, i will buy drinks for all my friends at the nearast pub.

So, given these beliefs, what political party should i align myself with?

    -- Posted by Armour-of-God on Thu, Dec 26, 2013, at 2:35 PM
  • If you must align with one of the two major parties AoG you are limited to the Democrats. That party definitely has a bigger tent with room even for a non-conformist like you. You may recall that a famous Okie named Will Rogers once said "I am not a member of any organized party, I am a Democrat". ;)

  • AoG,

I don't think you can go by the dictionary definitions of the words "conservative" & "liberal". A lot of "conservatives" believe in liberally using government funds to support private industry (fossil fuel industry tax incentives, for example, and weapons expenditures, not to mention amazing privileges for the financial industry, along with allowing liberal usage of private money in elections), while some "liberals" get a lot of flak for being conservative about attacking other countries. In politics, I think the two words have just become labels that people chose to join - more like picking allegiance to a football team, that has more to do with geography and community than philosophy for a lot of people.

I mean, look at the audit of the Fed that some people call the Bernie Sanders (the Socialist Senator) Audit the Fed Bill, and some call the Rand Paul (the Tea Party Senator) Audit the Fed Bill. They both introduced bills. It depends on what team you're on.

If you look at polling on issues, support for "liberal" policies (like Social Security) is quite high among people who call themselves "conservative" - I mean, who really doesn't like Medicare? But that's usually when you don't call a policy either liberal or conservative - and you talk about what to do about specific problems, not people or general philosophical preferences. Real policy questions are usually more about whether we're going to be liberal in our support of poor children or liberal in our support of bond holders - the unemployed or Boeing. It's really all about competing interests - and I'm continually amazed at how the real elite (people in the top tenth of a per cent of wealth) have managed to get anybody else to defend their interests. Using the word "conservative", which people like (maybe because it makes them feel prudent) seems to work pretty well.

  • Have to Say: "..and I'm continually amazed at how the real elite (people in the top tenth of a per cent of wealth) have managed to get anybody else to defend their interests."

This amazes all liberals (and I am one) because it is obvious to us that there are a large number of poor and near poor that do seem to vote against their own self-interest. It is either they believe in "trickle down ", or there are conservative social issues at play that make them detest liberals to such a degree that they must always vote against them (abortion, gun control, etc.). And then there is the tea party philosophy where a lot are in the "conservative" camp because they either don't believe in paying any taxes (Libertarians), or believe the government can never be trusted to spend tax money wisely and would rather throw the baby out with the bathwater. And then with our first black President conservatives have solidified their standing by gaining support from all the existing white racists that still exist (a large number it seems) and who might not quite fit into one of the other categories, although most racists overlap into several of those categories already. And of course, there is another superset category that many in these groups overlap with, and that is the ignorant. Have I left anyone out?

-- Posted by RationalThinker on Sun, Dec 29, 2013, at 6:53 AM
  • Sometimes I have to be perfectly honest with myself and acknowledge that the other side (conservatives) also has some extremely intelligent and rational individuals that just see things in a totally different light than us liberals. We are seen as simply naive to the "real world" and vote for ideology that never really works. We are but socialists who think that spreading the wealth will solve the world's ills, but in reality the strong survive, the wealthy drive our commerce, and voting against those principals is voting against our own self-interest as well. Is there some truth to this conservative way of thinking?

Straight and to the point.. and accurate!

-- Posted by RationalThinker on Sun, Feb 9, 2014, at 7:29 AM
  • Looks like Obama Care is working to me. Yet the GOP is trying to spin it differently by spinning the CBO stats. I've said for many years that if they could drop the Medicare age down to 62 that a lot of people would opt to try and retire early, and the only reason they are not is because they had to stay working to keep their health insurance. Now they are finding out that there are large numbers beside early retiree hopefuls that were working just to keep medical insurance. Many were wanting to start their own business but couldn't afford to pay the $800+ (varied by age) for their own medical insurance. And the good news is that several million people that could not afford health insurance now have it, which will eventually take a load off emergency rooms where the cost has become totally outrageous. To be fair, I know single people who make in the $30k range that will be forced to pay for insurance that will be around $200 a month that don't feel they can afford it, and it will make it tougher on them. Many will opt for the penalty. But those with children that are low income will get cheap insurance and everyone will benefit. If we could just get the GOP to help fix the pieces that need fixing as it progresses, but alas, they are only intent on trying to ruin the legacy of our first black President at whatever the cost. Thousands of lives will now be saved and desperate parents will have the option to take their sick children to real healthcare clinics early instead of waiting until their child is so sick they have no option but to go to the emergency room. We can only hope that the benefit to our society seen by this will allow our country to finally take the step to a single payer system so the remaining multitudes can also have access to healthcare.

-- Posted by RationalThinker on Wed, Feb 12, 2014, at 4:37 AM
  • Smart Dog, you are correct that the Congress proposes and writes the budget. However, there has been no budget during most of the Obama term. All budgets must start in the House of Representatives (Article I of the Constitutions). The House has passed them but the Senate has refused to not only not vote on them, but they have prevented them from being discussed. And the Republicans are called "obstructionists." This is the reason for all of the debt ceiling votes and continuing resolutions that Republicans have fought. If there is no budget, the most recent budget continues. That would be the budget from the Obama/Democrat Congress first 2 years in office. Democrats controlled both chambers of Congress during President Obama's first 2 years in office.

It is why Republicans are correct in identifying it as the Obama budget.

What is interesting to me is the comments that follow the article are overwhelming in support of the ACA. One guy uses the old "should have got a real job" rhetoric and gets eat'n alive, presumably by quite a few Fox News followers (just guessing) and I think the guy's spouse. If this is any indication of how the ACA is starting to affect the minds and souls of our nation, it's very positive.

  • InTheMiddle... sounds like your middle is a little right of center, but that's ok, as I wish the GOP had a lot more members worrying about fiscal responsibility than concentrating on satisfying the religious right. The debates should be about how much is reasonable to cut from the budget (if anything at this economic juncture) versus how much to raise taxes on the ever widening gap at the top. But the GOP remains indentured to the tyranny of Grover Norquist instead of doing the right thing. Any common ground here InTheMiddle?

We are going down too a 3rd World Country very fast,if you think about it! Both Parties are responsible! I asked before is there an answer in our system of Government?

  • I am just about 100 pct in agreement with you SD! Not sure I'd mandate a 5 pct across the board cut, as I don't want to take away anything from anyone who needs help the most. But I agree that we need to have a better focus on eliminating waste where it can be found. I would like to see mandatory screening before being allowed to buy a gun, and possibly licensing. I know I'll get a lot of resistance to that, but we have too many whackos running around to let just anyone purchase a gun. I know it is a slippery slope, but some common sense agreements need to be made.

  • The Social Security fix is in my mind very simple. Remove the cap and let the rich pay into it more than they will ever get out of it. Medicare a little tougher, but I believe we have to do something similar with it. By increasing taxes on the upper incomes and making a legitimate effort at reducing waste, most of our problems are solvable.

  • News I always felt that the Vote was the way to accomplish a good Government for the people! But that has all changed! I feel that the Government has perfected things, so that a few can disrupt the entire process with some silly tactic, that takes the Supreme Court to settle! With the right People set up on that Court, there is still no Honesty! That takes Years to get things in line from the bottom up,but i think its been done! I have NO faith in the System! Look at Florida when it Put BUSH over the top.NO, We have(NO) Honesty in Government anymore. Definitely not in the Vote. My opinion. We need a Government to watch this Government,ha

Why does the current administration want to put America in her place? Why do they want to bring us down.

The typical low information response will tell us how bad we are and how we have screwed the rest of the world.

  • I hear president Santa went on Ellen and she was fawning about how grateful everybody is that they have Obamacare. Really!

President Santa and the Demwits have single handedly destroyed one of the best health care systems in the world and for what? Control. It was never about health care or they would have had a website that worked. What does the low information crowd believe?

It is the same with global warming. They have government subsidized scientist tell them we have global warming because of man-made CO2. Why? Control. It is not about the climate it is an effort to make CO2 a commodity. You can still produce it but it will cost you. What does the low information crowd believe?

  • I just wish the low information crowd could tell me why this president is so great. Why is his policies so great. Why is the democrat party so great.

I would like to know how they take the moral high ground. I would like to know how the economic numbers the last five years still show us in a recession and the left media still tries to tell us we are recovering verrrrrrrrrrry slowly. Really! I would also like to know that just because we disagree with the president we are a racist because he is black. Is there some rule we can't disagree with black people?

I predict the demwits will run against Obamacare this election because they will say it is not the law they voted for because of all the changes. I would ask them why they went along with all the changes. They let president santa run rough shod over the constitution and the American people. They voted for the law and they should own it but you will see they will run from it to get reelected. How many low information liberals will vote for them?

How many low information liberals believe that government entitlements are a good way to buy votes? If you are scamming the system are you going to vote for someone that may make you go to work, make you take a drug test or put in place other restrictions that would make it harder for you to stay at home, drink your beer, smoke your cigarettes, or do your drugs. Who are they going to vote for? Santa Claus, the ones promising they can continue to rape the taxpayer.

I don't think that liberals understand that nothing is government funded it is ALL taxpayer funded.

If you consider non-right-wingers to be the low information crowd, I consider those who get their information from the likes of Rush to be the wrong information crowd.

I am a member of the Green Party. I only vote Democrat if the election is close. The Koch brothers can't buy my vote.

  • It seems like the more that the low information liberal gets their way the angrier they become. Why would someone be an angry white man in the greatest country in the world? They are told to be that way, they are told that corporations are evil, the rich are evil and they need to remain poor and tolerant of everything unless it is conservative or Christian. They are told they are too stupid to sign up for health care because they can't navigate the internet. They are told that the government is the answer, that you do not need to be responsible we are from the government and we are here to help you.

I should have said that I am an angry OLD white man. That is what the tea party seems to be made of. The younger generation seems to be more tolerant and enlightened. You may have noticed that gay rights and marijuana legalization are becoming more accepted. The Republican Party pushes us toward plutocracy and away from democracy. You won't call it Obamacare when it is proven to work.

It's the only thing they can do,they work for us, (i would think)! They are there make our Country better. The only way to do that is don't leave anyone behind, like on the Battle field! Most of these Politician's have never served in any branch of the Military! But they can vote to send someone else to die! They look out for themselves not the People! -- Posted by Oklahoma Reader on Fri, Mar 28, 2014, at 12:30 PM
  • There we see a typical low information response. Obamacare will never work. We find out as it unfolds that they lied about it from the very beginning. None of it is about healthcare, it is about tranfering wealth. It will be one of the worlds largest ponzi schemes ranking right up there with Social Security.

If Obamacare is so wonderful why don't we hear or see the success stories? All we hear is what an utter disaster it is and the low information media won't report it. We don't even know how many have signed up, the ones that have don't know if they have coverage, then they find out their doctor or hospital is not participation because they don't even know how to bill for it.

Complete and utter incompetence and lies. So how much longer will the low information crowd believe them? HMMMMMMMMM!!!!!

    -- Posted by rr3yv0 on Fri, Mar 28, 2014, at 3:32 PM
  • Why do the low information crowd believe the lie that capitalism is the problem when socialism fails every time? Freedom and capitalism made this country into something that no other nation has achieved. We have enjoyed things that people in other nations have never been able to.

Liberalism has tried to take this nation down for some time and lately has been achieving more and more liberal or progressive policies. We are seeing our freedoms being taken away little by little and our media taken over to the point we have a largely low information nation. Those that speak out about it are immediately attacked and called racist, homophobe, etc. Liberalism cannot survive in the arena of ideas because they are bankrupt.

Obamacare has taken a big step in the take down of this nation to function as we know it. We are being told that the terrible economy is the new normal, we should feel guilty for having so much so get used to having less, and we should not be a super power because it is like being a bully and that's not nice.

Can anyone brag about how good Obamacare and explain why the Democrats will not run on it this election cycle?

Can anyone explain why increasing the size of government and reducing opportunity in this country benefits the people?

People used to come to this country to be Americans, sure they brought their culture with them but they did not force it on fellow Americans. Now what do we have Afican-American, Asian-Americans, German-Americans, and we could go on and on. We are losing the American dream of being able to be succussful and also the ability to fail. The new dream is to be able to scam the system and to be on government entitlements. Then we can watch those poor folk go to work so we don't have to.

Liberalism always preaches about fairness and equality, yet their is nothing fair or equal about it. Everything they accuse others of they are guilty of but the low information crowd will never believe it. Unless they finally realize they are getting screwed by the very people that pretend to be for them. Someday hopefully!!!

  • Now, now, now rr3 please don't go back to spewing no information declarations. You are capable of doing better.

Have you ever heard of Sweden? It is a Nordic country that is socialist, and thriving to the point that it is far ahead of the good ole USA on every measure of quality of life for a citizenry.

  • Here we see the typical low information response because they are just repeating whatever they are told by the lame stream(state run) media. They also believe whatever the regime tells them to believe.

President Santa just told them to believe that they reached their goal by 7.1 million signing up for Obamacare. It seems that millions signed up overnight. They won't or can't tell us the exact number and they don't know how many has even paid and the ones that have signed up don't know if they actually have coverage or not. They do know if they put it out in the media a large number i.e. low information people will suck it up and believe it. The media said it was a 'victory lap' and it seemed all of them were on the same page like they were told what to say. They keep telling us that it is the Republicans that want to take people's health insurance away from them. But who is taking health insurance away from people? Obama is. What do the low information crowd believe? They believe every lie Obama speaks because he promises things but never fulfills the promise. It is the largest wealth transfer in the history of the world.

It is no different then the unemployment numbers that does not give a true picture of what it actually is. Under Bush the unemployment was under 5% and we were in a recession. That is what they kept telling us. Under PSC the unemployment rate has never been under 7% but we have been in recovery. That is what the state media preaches to the low information crowd and they believe it. We may have been entering a recession under Bush but we are still in it no matter how much they cook the books.

I would like to know how long a Republican president would have been allowed to stay in office if he/she had done even one half of what PSC and his regime has done. Then to make it worse nobody has been held accountable for what has been done.

It amazes me the number of people that are being deceived and then they defend it. The Democrat party has done a good job of it. They convince people that there is no God and that morality is whatever society will tolerate. Then they will believe whatever they want to put out there because they are not grounded in any morals or belief.

It was immoral for thousands of years to murder unborn babies. All they had to do was tell people that it wasn't a baby it was a fetus. With technology we can see that a fetus forms human parts very quickly after conception but we are told that it is ok to have a baby partially born, all but the head, stick a pair of forceps into the base of the skull scramble the brains and suck them out. Now this is done to a baby that has formed all the human attributes. It's amazing what you can accomplish without God.

They also believe in climate change, global warming, global cooling, etc. Whatever fits the agenda at any given time. They assume any evidence to the contrary is a lie but will believe a computer model that can be manipulated to give any result that you want. Without believing there is a God in control I guess it would be easy to believe man is in control. How many catastrophic global climate change predictions made in the last 30 years have come true?

As you will see the low information crowd will never address any of these lies all they will do is claim that my information is wrong. That I am the one misinformed, misled and lied too. They will never address an issue because they cannot without destroying the credibility or the character of the person telling the truth. That's how lies are defended. I believe in God and the morals that he has instilled in every human. If it is against God and his morals it is wrong. That will always be true.

  • Speaking of frogs and their delectable lower appendages; as a rural kid I used barbed gigs to fill the skillet. It is a more primitive form of the hunt, kinda up close and personal.

Frogs are a rather unusual source of sustenance. Not only are they tasty and nutritious they provide entertainment before dinner. Those long slender pink legs doing high kicks in the skillet rivaled the Rockettes, and were a hell of a lot hotter.

And I remember supping on them as the sound of their surviving kin in the nearby pond drifted through the kitchen window, singing an accompanying baritone chorus. It sounded like a dirge. ;)

Most learn of its lack of effectiveness by the time they leave the elementary school yard. Unfortunately some never do. Definition moron: "usually offensive: a person affected with mild mental retardation"

I really don't think there are any morons posting here though there may be a few from time to time; those exhibiting the lack of ability to state a case for an opinion; only able to hurl insults as rebuttal may fall into the category of moron. ;)

The nut in the Fort Hood did use a gun. Why are the men and women in our armed forces that are sent to other countries to defend our freedom not allowed to defend themselves at home? Another one of those gun free zones where the 'nut' has the advantage.

Of course the low information crowd are told the gun is the 'nut' and needs to be takes away from law biding citizens. Again another win for the 'nut' with a gun.

  • Thank you news and okr.

It is a sad day for the state of Kansas when they found out Sebelius was resigning. They are scared that she is coming back.

You know president santa being the first black president had an opportunity to be the greatest president this country had ever had. He could have brought unity to this country like we haven't seen since the founding. Sadly he has done exactly the opposite by dividing this country more then it ever has been.

We see the AG get upset during a hearing saying that no AG has had to put up with that. Don't they remember what they put some of the Rebublican AG's through. Short term memory loss, must be all that pot smoking.lol.

Then we see the AG trying to be subtle but he really wants to say that anyone against him is a racist. He does this at some Sharpton event and Al has become rich being one of the biggest racist in the country along with Jesse. It is unbelievable the lies that they will go to, to politicize everything. How many of us can owe $2 million in taxes since 2006 and get a pass? Al's organization does and they still owe it with no intention to pay it. Should they go to jail? These people along with the current administration think they are untouchable.

Whenever there is a Republican attorney general that can actually do the job the Demwits go on witch hunt and then think they should not be under scrutiny. Now the low information voters will believe this. In none of these stories that I read was there anything about asparagus.

Some people are learning that they can't listen to the state run media and get the truth anymore, hardly ever. Will they all learn? No Everyday our intelligence is insulted by president santa and his gang. Or is it? You decide!

  • I do believe you are a better writer than when you first came here rr3; maybe we all are. After all we have all spent a goodly amount of time fussin' with each other to the best of our abilities.

  • "You know president santa being the first black president had an opportunity to be the greatest president this country had ever had. He could have brought unity to this country like we haven't seen since the founding. Sadly he has done exactly the opposite by dividing this country more then it ever has been."

I'm not trying to pick on you RR3, it is just that you write so many outlandish things I feel the need to respond. Nobody can bring unity to this country under the current political climate where the GOP is out to do the opposite of absolutely everything the Democrats propose. Paul Ryan's budget is shameful, and such an extreme it has no possibility of warranting a compromise. Even as the ACA finally hits its projected numbers signifying a successful direction, it is attacked as a failure by the GOP. This new breed of right-wing GOP members that want to keep the rich in power and meddle in everyone's social business IS the problem. This group of religious right wing nut jobs make conservatives like Jeb Bush and Chris Christy look like left wing liberals. There is no common ground with this group.

  • Sadly RT it is all Obama when it comes to the division in this country during his tenure. He puts the poor against the rich, illegals against American citizens, etc. What hasn't he divided all for political gain. Granted the low information voter won't ever believe it because they believe in the state run media. Obama was never qualified to be a leader of anything, he is a 'Community Antagonizer' and that is the only thing he is good at.

He has apologized to everyone so they would like us, but they still hate us. He supports terrorist groups and people seem to be ok with it. Al Queda is stronger now then they were 5 years ago. He has lost more lives in Afghanistan then Bush did, but you didn't hear that on your media did you. When you look at the facts, the GOP has not been in charge, but the Demwits have gotten everything they want and they are still not happy. Because it never works. It is all built on lies for political gain.

"The further a society drifts from the truth, the more it will hate those that speak it". George Orwell

We see that on here as anyone that speaks the truth is viciously attacked. Instead of any intelligent dialogue they only want to attack the character or the person's source of information. The reason is that lies will not stand against the truth. The truth will always prevail.

The best thing to do is post what is true and let the entertainment begin. It is sad and funny at the same time. It will make you realize how we this president got elected not only once but twice.

For those that read this blog but don't post because of the attacks, just don't take it personal just go ahead and post and then be entertained as you read post from those that claim to be informed and think rationally. You will see when you post the truth they will feel the need to respond. Isn't that sweet.

    -- Posted by rr3yv0 on Sun, Apr 13, 2014, at 6:18 PM
  • Why are the liberals not speaking out about the IRS scandals? They are supposed to be the freedom loving tolerant ones. Right!

We find that Elijah Cummings(D) was fed emails from Lerner about a conservative organization that wanted to get the truth out. Yet he tried to make Issa(R) out as a racist. Amazing to what measures they will take to cover up the truth of this gross abuse of power. Does the low information liberal even know the truth about this?

Going a bit further in to the history of these blogs rr3, why do you think it is that it has been folks such as DO and his rightwing predecessors such as Third World that have been kicked off these forums for egregious behavior? Can you recall even one person from the left who has been booted?

  • Maybe the only solution is a partition of our nation. The south central part of our country, namely old Dixie, and its border states, could secede, and be renamed the United States of Stepford.

All the Phyllis Schlafly types, all the Limbaughesques, all the Pat Robertson followers, and so on could move there, changing back to their foggy version of a 1950s culture. They could block all TV news signals excepting Fox, and live happily ever after.

All the good folks who would want to flee such a rat hole could engage in home swaps, etc. with those eager to move in to Stepford. Everybody happy!

Then maybe, just maybe, we in the remaining United States would once again have a non-polarized functioning government, universal health coverage, freedom from religion based morality's intrusion into our private lives, reduced prison populations, and a decent standard of living for all our citizens. ;)

  • By the way rr3 as you may recall I have proposed on several occasions to swap my nice little Oklahoma home for yours in Missouri so that we would each reside in a more compatible social environment. It would have been a one on one swap similar to what I just wrote about the United States of Stepford.

Well buddy you missed the boat, the offer is off the table. I no longer see a heck of a lot of difference in Missouri, and Oklahoma excepting Oklahoma for the moment has a few more Southern Baptists. ;)

  • Hey OKR, the splitting of our nation idea sounds intriguing. I'm guessing one section would soon start to look a lot like Iran or Afghanistan, and the other part would drift towards looking like a Switzerland or Sweden. It would be the hippies versus the neocons, the free lovers versus the sex with guilt group. It would be those who share versus those who hoard. I already know the ones of you I'd be sharing a country with... don't bogart that joint my friend :-)

  • What about we move the border fence between us and Mexico over to the U. S. S. border? Then we could seed their rain clouds with estrogen, also attack with drones equipped with sprayers and tanks full of it to bring a calming effect to the enemy. A new sort of warfare such as that might just be the proactive solution!

By the way it might be a good thing to also equip the Drones with loud speakers blasting out Debbie and Pat Boone songs.

While I am at it I appreciated your poking holes in the propaganda during the recent local brouhaha. To me the bottom line regarding a lack of educational achievement is poverty. If poverty continues to increase, and I believe it will, achievement in education will continue to diminish.

Nothing else that we do will end the plunge, not new schools, not Common Core (which I believe will leave even more poor kids behind and dropping out), not even better teachers if we can't lower class size along with that improvement, and certainly not somebody's God peeking over kids' shoulders in every classroom.

We went to Sweet Springs regularly, taking our separated cream to sell at the creamery. I do not recall that bridge however though we used back roads to go to Sweet Springs.

  • I was in Bunkerville, NV yesterday. I drove by the Bundy ranch and did not see even one cow on his property. I wonder where they could be.

I would estimate that about 50 of the militia gun nuts were still camped in the area. That estimate includes the women and children the cowards would use as shields.

When your department title begins with the word bureau, there is a good chance that it is run by bureaucrats. The BLM made many blunders. The First Amendment Areas were a joke. Their timing couldn't have been worse. Tortoises were leaving their dens and the cattle were calving. Closing 600,000 acres of recreation land hurt the local economies.

Bundy doesn't have a legal leg to stand on. In 1864, years before the Bundy's arrived, Nevada became a state. The Nevada constitution specifically states that Nevada would forever cede most of its land to the federal government. The Bundy's didn't buy the 160 acre ranch until 1948 and didn't have grazing permits until 1953. Bundy has been drubbed in the courts.

Those involved in the standoff should be prosecuted for child endangerment and obstruction of justice at the very least. The militia presence is still affecting the local economy. Most people in Bunkerville and Mesquite wish that the militia and the Bundy's would just leave.

  • Good comments dR and SD.

You provoked the thought that sometime in the next ten years there may be a rash of lawsuits against parents of home "schooled" by the children for failing to provide them a viable education.

I personally know two good kids in Kansas who are ignorant of most things kids may acquire in public school, and misinformed regarding the rest. The custodial parent has had multiple visitations by Kansas child welfare officials who turned a blind eye to the mess. Come to think of it such kids may find a deeper pocket in state government as a co-defendant.

-- Posted by Oklahoma Reader on Tue, May 6, 2014, at 3:47 PM
  • To allow the militia to get away with what they pulled would set a terrible precedent. The militias would be emboldened to interfere with any government actions that they didn't agree with. OKR is probably aware of the upcoming clash over the Red River situation.

Two of the worst precedent setting mistakes were made by Cheney's puppet. Allowing torture opens the door for any enemy holding US POWs. A preemtive attack on another country because you perceive a threat opens the door for any country to attack another country and claim they felt threatened.

-- Posted by desert Rat on Tue, May 6, 2014, at 6:41 PM
  • I am assuming dR that you are referencing the Red River situation described at the following link. http://www.dallasnews.com/news/local-news/20140430-red-river-land-dispute-echoes...

It is a rather large assumption on my part because Okies and Texans have found ways to make the Red River one point of controversy, or another, in one fashion, or another since Oklahoma became a state.

His presentations are usually typical wing nut activity in that after he offers them, and someone takes the time to debunk them, he has nothing more to say; instead moving on to presentation of another piece of misinformation.

It is the primary tactic of the right; a constant slinging of sh*t against the wall knowing that some will stick, will be observed by many, and believed by some to be a graphic illustration depicting truth despite the obvious stink. Without that tactical deviation of excretion the right's nasty business would be flushed as it should be.

  • I don't think rr3 is ever looking for the truth News; instead he looks for declarations that support his every preconceived position which he always considers to be true. It is the mind set of rightists.

I hasten to add that leftists, and centrists may also fall into that trap, but are less likely to be as dogmatic.

Leftists often argue among themselves (you and I are a good example of that LOL). In all the years we have been around these blogs I have yet to see the first disagreement, and quarrel between two Rightists.

Centrists by definition must look at both sides to stay centrists, though there has been a shift from center left, to center, and finally center right over the last thirty years among that group. It is likely that as they watch and absorb things that at some point they for a period of time will shift again.

Then there is the Right who take Reagan's statement that Republicans must never criticize other Republicans as near gospel. They are in fact the Rigid Right. I personally believe that it is primarily due to differences in their brains, and there is considerable evidence to support that view. Much of it has been presented in this forum over the last several years. Differences in the amygdala is one of those differences.

  • Tar Baby and Troll

Fraught with dangers is a forum's path.

Woe to you if you stir someone's wrath.

    Especially troublesome are one, or two;

first is the Troll who will gnaw and chew.

The Troll goal is to stir all your hate,

bite at your head, and slowly masticate.

After all of your senses are pulverized

you blurt to hurt, and become despised.

Equally troubling in my jaundiced view

is what a lurking Tar Baby can do to you.

They twist your words as well as their own.

The more you engage and try best to explain,

the more they twist and treat with disdain.

Being stuck to a Tar Baby is not any fun.

Pull back as you will you can't get undone.

We must point out to them that wrathful God is outraged at the actions of all the homosexuals, blacks, Democrats, Hispanics and atheistic lying scientists.

Therefore God has turned all but fundamentalist Christian humanity's actions against themselves provoking climate change. It gives them a fresh prayer route; "O Lord please stop the sinners efforts to despoil your beautiful garden", and their actions will follow their prayers. ;)

  • I think you are spot on SD that Karl Rove is brain damaged. I will go even further and offer a potential diagnosis based on his lack of compassion and related emotions that he is a victim of a petrified anterior insula, and/or petrified anterior cingulate as well as a hyphenated hypothalamus.

Unfortunately it is a brain disease he shares with many others among the political Right. As best I can tell the only cure is a partial lobotomy which has horrible side effects that leave the "cured" patient a near zombie. Although it is obvious that the cure leaves the patient less a threat to society, the patient can no longer take care of himself.

The operation will not become a viable option until there is a removal of the multitudes of afflicted from power who now exercise control in our society. Those afflicted would never agree to take care of the post operative patients, any more than they will for any of the other vulnerable populations. It is truly an ironic catch 22. ;)

  • "The Fascinating Bedlam of Creationism"

The bed rock of many Creationists is the King James version of the Bible. Biblical texts were interpreted in the sixteenth century by forty seven English theologians, and scholars at the behest of the English ruling class resulting in that version.

Of course it is imperative that Creationists believe that all forty seven had a direct long distance connection to God in order to not even wonder if one, or more of the multitude of other translations, by many theologian/scholars in many lands, who spoke, wrote, and read as a primary language English, or other than English, may have had a similar God connection. And so it goes.

    An interesting read: http://www.truth-out.org/buzzflash/commentary/the-fascinating-bedlam-of-creation...

He was the one that proclaimed he was a world traveler, hinted at involvement in espionage, and unnamed government organizations, etc. He may have been the one with these forums greatest meltdown.

He along with DO, and Third Child were Alex Jones fans. I don't think Raytown Bill was a fan, but was far right.

I saw only two tents, one motor home and maybe eight travel trailers. I suspect most of the goons spend the heat of the day at casinos in Mesquite. In a few weeks, low temperatures will be in the nineties. After losing at the casinos and suffering in the heat, the goons will be long gone before the fourth of July.

  • It amazes me that they can swallow whole the most preposterous things. I some times wonder if many of them have been preconditioned to embrace the preposterous by early fundamentalist Christian teachings of parents and parsons.

After all if one can swallow whole that the earth is six thousand years old, early religious tales twisted by multiple interpretations through the centuries are embraced that state magic is real, i.e. people walk on water, produce huge amounts of food from a mere hand full, and so on, they are ripe to believe anything.

It is compounded by the fact that so called leaders who purport to share their believe in such garbage, are telling them the nonsensical political tales that dovetail with that tripe. Deluded from the day they were born I reckon. Allegory is one thing, but this insanity is quite another.

Over to the right side of the screen is the most read column which has a most discussed option. I hit most discussed, it brought up politics, and religion, I could touch those, and get to the forums. Once on the Politics, or Religion forums there was an "other forums" with the words "Speak Out" it would take me when touched, to the original Speak Out forum.

  • For a very long time one thing that I have regretted is the lack of a public sense of regret within our observation of Memorial Day.

It is there on a personal level. I am certain that many who have suffered from a personal loss, that is the death of a loved one in armed conflict, in any one of our many wars, are overcome with regret caused by the attendant loss of one near and dear, as well as the futility of the causative circumstances.

Yet among all the grand words publically spoken honoring the sacrifice, few deal with the regret at strategic mistakes made leading to the unnecessary deaths of thousands whose absence is grieved.

How can we properly honor those lost without emphasizing that caution, and care must be taken that not more precious life is lost in those wars essentially provoked by unfounded aggression?

Somehow though we always manage to do just that with much of the general public address, ignoring regret at our mistakes, and instead ramping up patriotic, jingoistic support for the next, which is likely just around the corner.

Perhaps it causes just too much anguish for us to collectively acknowledge, and bear; that our pain, our grief, and our loved one's loss all was for naught, when stripped even of the dignity afforded by necessity.

Thank you for your service, including all of you who continue to serve, voluntarily, or not; by every day bearing the loss of a loved one. Though your hero's pain is gone, yours will always linger on; I am sorry.

  • The gun nut crowd (not all gun owners) avow that if everyone had guns there would not be mass shootings, their hypothesis holds that an armed good guy would kill 'em before they could get er done.

Maybe it is time to call their bluff in a big way. Why not select some sample schools, all in places that the NRA is strong, and arm every student over eighteen with a hand gun. As many of the mass murders happen at schools that would be the perfect culture dish for the experiment.

Once in the experiment a school could not drop out for three years, no matter what happened. I would be willing to bet that if that is done we would get a handle on the mass shooting at schools problem. It is time for the NRA, and gun nuts to put up, or shut up.

You would go for that wouldn't you firethecurrent?

  • Sorry for the long excerpt below, it is from the link below. At the link is a pretty good description as to how strong "Lefties" think and feel, and why, and what they intend to do about it. A lot more as well. The best read I have had for a while. Oh, did I say it may be inspirational, and informing to some of us? One last thing; rr3 this is a must read for you, an opportunity to get inside a Lefty's mind. You think Obama is a Lefty?

"And this is the conclusion to which I am now arriving:

When in war, when defending revolutions, when fighting imperialism: one has to be, and to write as a poet... Each report has to be part of a great novel which will be written in the future, or which is being written right there, as one prepares his or her reports. Otherwise it is all ****, and will touch nobody and change nothing.

This is where our only advantage is, against those corporate ******: we are human and alive and we have a heart that is on the left and blood that is red, and all that we do is because we love this world passionately... we love this humanity... and we fight and are ready to die for it.

Every report should have at least one poem hidden inside it. It has to touch. It has to offer warmth and relief, and it has to outrage and lead people onto the barricades.

We have to learn how to write like that, again. Otherwise everything is really lost!

And then, instead of recycling as those corporate scribes and academia do, we have to listen to the people, and not to the establishment, not to each other."

There are times when people of good conscience must struggle against our collective nature, and at the very least notice such things enough to pause, and feel sorrow about them. We are our brother's keepers, and response in some small ways is morally mandatory.

  • The NRA on their headquarters has emblazoned only the second part of the second amendment. Perhaps it is time that someone brought suit against the NRA, and all owners of guns most suited for armed conflict.

The jist of the suit would be that unless such gun owners are members of duly constituted militias they must give up their weapons that are best suited for that purpose, and that the NRA must stop advancing open sales of such weapons. I think even todays Supreme Court may have a hard time ignoring the entire Second Amendment, or twisting the Amendment, when having to deliberate from that perspective.

Now I could be wrong, so "fire" educate me please. I know it will take a considerable amount of research to answer my question, but hey anything to prove your point huh?

  • Just now reading some posts back to 5/23 in polictics, although Free Will discussion might belong more in the Religion section. No, SD and I are not one and the same. I wish I was as smart as SD, OKR, or News. News has a little twisted flare to his logic, but that's probably because he's too smart :-)

Anyway, the free will (FW) post of SD is interesting, and as usual, any time I start contemplating FW, it gives me a headache. Without FW means that every little atom and molecule and sub particle has bounced around exactly as it should based on the laws of physics and in theory then, every larger object it is part of could also be precisely predicted, even to the electromagnetic pulses that cause our brains to think certain thoughts. All this is predetermined because everything must act in an exact way because of the laws of physics. Even though we don't know ALL the laws, most of us rational individuals understand the truth associated with those laws. So that means that every little atom rotation and molecular interaction in our cosmic soup of possible influence has even led up to my little writing of this post, and your brain's activity and events that led up to you reading this. Those of you who haven't read this post didn't do so because of the same set of sub atomic events that were predictable by net summation (oh, that's right, you aren't reading this :-) Anyway, this is why the thought of FW ends up giving me a headache. The simplest explanation for me to justify FW (something that can't be justified by logic) is that I "feel" to be in control of my thought process and based on all the events, including this discussion thread) I am exposed to, allow me to make rational decisions that can affect my choices (hopefully) in a positive way. Of course, I guess this post was pre-determined :-(

  • On guns... perhaps should be in political blog. Can't we make it simple? Let's have the right to have one in our home (I don't, but have considered it often), and certainly living in the country would make me want to have a gun; and obviously for hunting. But I certainly would be spooked being anywhere in public with regular citizens display holstered pistols when I know there is a possibility they are not part of our police or military. NO WAY do I want to see that. The potential of crazy police or military is bad enough, let alone the weirdoes I see next to me in public.

  • What a great weekend for you firethecurrent. It doesn't get much better than that. I fondly recall some hunting trips with my Dad.

One in particular stands out. When I turned sixteen my Dad and I went to Mendon goose hunting, just the two of us. I got to drive his car, a big deal to me then. He used to put a touch of bourbon in a big thermos of coffee, and he allowed me to share that. I suppose it was a sort of rite of passage. We got one goose, I thought I shot it, but in hindsight I knew that he did.

-- Posted by Oklahoma Reader on Mon, Jun 9, 2014, at 1:31 PM
  • That provoked other thoughts that I want to share.

In the late 1950s myself with friends, and other groups of kids as well used to get up early, and go duck hunting on the river before school. We would throw our guns in the trunk, and head back to school. There were guns in cars of students in the student parking lot quite often in hunting season. I do not recall that ever causing a problem.

Social environments change, and adaptations for the welfare of all must be made. However that does not mean that adaptation of a one size fits all nature for the entire nation is best regarding gun control, or anything else. I would prefer to see a mandate for states, and large metropolitan areas to locally originate forms of gun control that are effective for their individual social environments. What is necessary for the south side of Chicago would not be a fit for rural Missouri, nor Butte Montana. What say you?

Scudder's Junk Yard didn't have fencing strong enough to contain some of their Junk, and it would spill out onto the Railroad Tracks and we would pick it up & resell it back to them. Wasn't the most honest thing to do, but we wanted to go see the Three Stooges at the old Mary lo Theater,on North Street.Ten Cents a Ticket!

-- Posted by Jo on Tue, Jun 10, 2014, at 4:06 PM
  • Yep Jo I did the junking too, but in the early 50s. I lived on a farm from fall 1946 until spring 1953, then back to Marshall. Just as you said H. H. Scudder's stuff would spill out beside the tracks.

Beyond that there was in my time a hole in the fence near the tracks, I think I know who made that hole, and they used to squirm through it, sneak around, grab heavy chunks of scrap metal, back out the hole, around to the entrance, then sell it back to "old man" Scudder. So, what you guys did was down right honest in comparison. ;)

We used to scoop snow, also clean out garages for folks. Sometimes there was junkable metal that they wanted gone. We would load it in the old Radio Flyer wagon, and drag it down to Scudders.

Then there were the real jobs, for which I got my social security card at age twelve. De-tasseling corn, and rogueing milo. I still have that old S. S. card with my childish scrawl of a signature. It is sixty two years old.

The Republican Party screwed up when they adopted the Tea Party. That adoptee has grown into a monster that is devouring the G. O. P. Well nourished by the Koch Brothers, and others who believe the John Birch Society (the Koch's father was a founder) may not be quite far enough to the right, they have muscle.

They are well on their way to an eventual split between those who simply thrive on greed fed by the largesse of the Corporatocracy, and those who are fundamentalist in all aspects of their lives, eschewing science, and every rational position, preferring to trust their gut, and be slaves to their emotions. the latter is a scary lot.

Contrary to what many believe I think that the Tea Party will continue to grow for a little while. As more, and more poor, blue collar middle class, and ignorant people's backs are put to the wall they will also strike out from emotion, not reason, finding kindred spirits in the Tea Party.

Meanwhile the so called corporate wing of the G.O.P. will languish, some surviving by being propped up financially by their corporate masters. The problem for that wing is that there will be no new blood of that nature able to get the votes of an angry Republican primary electorate.

I do believe that they will diminish as older folks die off so they must hasten to make their mischief while they can. After the die off I hope that the Republican Party will itself die off, hopefully to rise again, perhaps as the New Republicans, with the kind of center right conservatism that was their core in their best years. I also hope that this will give the Democratic Party enough elbow room to move back to their traditional center left position.

If we can budge off the current center right position as a whole to the center; maybe, just maybe, we can once again have a functional legislative branch for our nation. Maybe some how then, we can even vanquish that monster more threatening than even the Tea Party, corporate control of politics.

  • ""This is a miracle from God that just happened," exulted David Brat, an economics professor, as his victory became clear in the congressional district around Virginia's capital city."*

David Brat (love that name) says that God favored him, but wait a minute, Eric Cantor believes in God too. Why would God favor one of his children over another? Oh that's right Cantor is Jewish, wrong God I reckon in Brat's mind.

  • This is a silly remark ,but everytime i see the leadership of the Republican's lined up behind a podium it reminds me of Hitler and his Nazi Henchman in the old Movietone News Reel's! Just a gut feeling.

  • Down here in Okie land every political ad on television manages to spit out the word Obama as if it is an epithet, or a synonym for repulsive hard waste of the digestive process. The same goes for Obamacare.

Nearly every one of them states that they will oppose Obama, and ObamaCare, and have the better record of doing so. That is true not only of those running for federal offices, but state offices.

We just aren't seeing ads for Democratic candidates. That is because if a Democrat has the foolish temerity to even run for an office, there is not a second candidate that foolhardy to cause a primary race.

Is anything like that going on in Missouri?

Beware becoming a one party state!

  • It is too bad that countries don't lose wars like they used to. In the old days, well, take Germany for instance; when a country lost a war it went down in flames. Those who were accused of war crimes were put on trial, and if found guilty were penalized, some paid with their lives.

We pop over on false pretenses to Vietnam, lose the war. No heads roll, no prison doors slam.

We concoct falsehoods and invade Iraq, blunder for years, fight on hard then leave a country behind destroyed, and now in the midst of a civil war. We lost the war, did some bad things, but no one has been held accountable.

It seems we will never learn that when we manufacture lies as reasons for war, and the reasons morph into goals, it is impossible to accomplish them, they don't exist. At that point we lose, the rest is aftermath.

The commentary at the following link is an excellent bit on Iraq, it and Jo's patriotic demands that heads roll inspired me, and compelled me to this rant tonight. http://www.truth-out.org/buzzflash/commentary/iraq-descends-into-bloody-factiona...

  • If there is NO penalties for such blatant lies,(which some were confirmed)There will always be Wars,(in my opinion)! There is NO honor anymore! When you have Leaders such as BUSH & CHENEY,are the most CORRUPT, DISHONORABLE, SLIME THERE HAS EVER BEEN! EVERY TIME I SEE HONORABLE Men & Women being Killed in this big lie,i want to puke! And the 5 or 6 that caused it still alive and kicking! It's not fair that this Country did nothing to make it right to the Families and their Loved one's! Its NO wonder this Country is hated by so many? If i was able and they wanted me to SERVE again,(I WOULD NOT)! I THOUGHT AT THE TIME IT WAS A NOBLE THING TO DO!

  • SD: im not so sure we have any worse Politicians They are all the same! there is NO individual thinkers any more. Thats how they become Politicians, just go along with the herd! When i hear Obama speak,he has a way of revealing his very sincere feelings, more so than anyone in a long time! And i have seen how a President can be stopped with any good things happening for the People! Actually NO real power at all, unless things are Changed in the procedural process,(THE NONSENSE)???? AND THERE IS A LOT TO CHANGEd!

  • Cantor's loss to Brat was a result of Brat's right wing populism. Democrat establishment politicians should take heed as they may also fall to populist Democrats.

Brat hammered hard at establishment policy of rescuing the rich. So should Democrat challengers. http://progressive.org/news/2014/06/187734/cantors-loss-part-backlash-against-ba...

  • I believe Brat won because he is one of the few highly educated tea party members with credentials and looks, plus a lot of alumni that has taken his class. And never underestimate the power of personality. He is a rare bird in a Duck Dynasty world, at least, that is what I am hoping. Cantor is also way out there and finally his saying anything to get elected backfired.

  • Where there is a Will there is a way Smart Dog. In this case it seems that George Will has lost his way.

He had become irrelevant to much of the so called conservative (they conserve nothing) crowd. Such folk have no interest in purported reason and rationality instead reacting with all the trappings of a lynch mob excepting a rope to execute their destructive mission. ;)

  • Over half the "bee friendly" plants sold at major garden centers have neonicotinoids in them. so you buy some flowers to plant to feed the bees, and instead the flowers kill the bees. Can't we do anything right?

  • To Missouri voters; if Rex Sinquefield through one of his many front organizations is backing your favorite political candidates you should consider reevaluating your choices. King Rex ain't your friend.
