Pastors Column -- The Awakening We Need
Revival is a glorious manifestation of the presence and power of God sweeping through churches, communities and nations. Both the Bible and history, including American, testify to the reality and power of such times of revival. We need revival in America today, but revival will not come without a spiritual awakening in the churches first, and that has four requirements.
First, we must see the spiritual and the moral condition of our nation and our churches. The soul of America is being destroyed by the cancer of sin. Sin is rebellion against God, defiance of His holy laws. Results today are moral depravity, family destruction, corruption in government and society and these at a time of greatest peril in our national history as unfriendly nations, armed with unbelievable weapons of mass destruction, prepare for war. Sadly, our multiplied thousands of churches have not had the power of God to turn things around. Compromise and complacency have grieved the Holy Spirit and robed us of His power.
Second, we need to see what to expect if we do not repent and turn to God. We will certainly face the judgment of all-powerful, Holy God if we do not destroy ourselves first! His warnings are multiplying all around us. The Bible and history testify to his judgment on great nations that defied Him and His holy laws. See Daniel, chapter four and five and Amos 4:6-12. America is more accountable because we have been so exceptionally blessed by God.
Third, we need to see the glory of Christ and the amazing grace and transformation possible when people are fully surrendered to Him. He delivers from addictions, saves and transforms the hopeless, rescues and restores the prodigals, heals broken heats and relationships, revives and empowers churches. He can even heal a nation if people repent and turn to Him.
Fourth, we Christians and churches need to acknowledge and deal thoroughly with our sins that prevent the release of God's saving, healing power. The worst sins of the unbelieving world cannot prevent revival, but the sins of Christians can! See Isaiah 59:1-2. That is the message of God's revival covenant in II Chronicles 7:14 he says, "If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray, and seek My face, and turn their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sins and heal their land."
Revival awaits the awakening and repentance of God's people. The vital question is will we wake up before it is too late?
