Friday, April 19, 2013

The Arrow Rock Chapter of the NSDAR met Tuesday, March 19, at the Public Library in Marshall.

Regent Thieman opened the meeting with the Ritual Order. Six members were in attendance. She gave the President General Merry Ann T. Wright's message regarding the upcoming 122nd Continental Congress events. Chapters that have suffered loss of records due to disaster or tragedy may request access on a case by case basis for an electronic copy of all active members.

The DAR library lay lite restoration project should be completed by the time members receive the May/June Issue of "American Spirit," and Wright has travelled or will be traveling to Bermuda, Bahamas, Mexico, California and the western zone states to personally present to chapters, who qualify, a certificate for 100 percent participation in the President General's project.

Thieman gave the national defense report that honored women who have served our country since the Revolutionary War through the War in Afghanistan.

Mary Burge gave the Indian minute on the Hopi Indians (name means peaceful ones) who in 1548-1598 swore allegiance to the King of Spain. In 1882 the United States gave a presidential order that the Hopi Indians be recognized and a 2.5 million acre Hopi Reservation was established.

The minutes from February's meeting were read and approved. The treasurer's report was given by Mandy Dorrance.

Members will be donating veterans personal comfort items for the VA hospital. The chapter will be planting a dogwood tree April 26, national Arbor Day, in the Arrow Rock Park as a conservation project.

Thieman reminded members who are having lunch at the state conference to sign up. DAR's exhibit is "Fashioning the New Woman" in the National Museum of American History. Members can adopt an object and pay to have it there. Arrow Rock Chapter has been awarded the bronze level for member subscription to the American Spirit magazine.

The meeting was adjourned. The program was a film of patriotic military anthems from all branches of service.
