Athletic training students representing the Missouri Valley College Athletic Training Education Program competed in the Fifth Annual Mid-America Athletic Trainers' Association Quiz Bowl on Friday, March 15, in Tulsa, Okla.

Fourteen teams from seven Midwestern states qualified for the JeopardyTM-style event, the winner of the competition to represent the Mid-America Athletic Trainers' Association at the National Athletic Training Quiz Bowl in Las Vegas.

The MVC ATEP quiz bowl team qualified for the Mid-America Association Bowl by virtue of its second place finish at the Missouri Athletic Training Quiz Bowl on Feb. 2.

The team ended the preliminary round on the bubble of qualifying for the championship round by being in third place with the final question looming.

"We wanted to be prepared for all possible situations," MVC ATEP Quiz Bowl Captain Ben Snyder said. "To avoid confusion and disagreements at the competition, we met as a team before departing for Tulsa. We pre-determined that we would risk half of our points in this scenario."

The strategy paid off; the team answered the final question correctly, catapulting them to a first place finish in the preliminary round and advancing them to the championship round.

"We knew the top three teams in each preliminary round would qualify for the championship round," said team member Darrell Brooks. "We were focused on our goal of advancing to the championship round and giving ourselves the opportunity to compete for first place. Winning our preliminary round gave us confidence and momentum going into the championship round."

The MVC team competed against five other teams in the championship round.

The team correctly answered 11 of the 12 championship round questions putting them in first place entering the final question with 11,200 points, 5,200 more points than their nearest competitor.

The team wagered 850 points on the final question but was unable to state the correct response. All other teams also answered the final question incorrectly. This resulted in the MVC ATEP winning their first Mid-America Athletic Trainers' Association Quiz Bowl Championship by a margin of 10,750 points.

"We came to Tulsa with two goals and we achieved both of them," said team member Jami Mayberry. "The opportunity to represent MVC, and the Mid-America Athletic Trainers' Association at the National Athletic Training Quiz Bowl during my senior year is definitely the cherry on top of graduation."

"I cannot fully describe how proud I am of these athletic training students and their achievement," said Karla Bruntzel, MVC ATEP director. "They worked extremely hard during the past several months to prepare for both the state and district quiz bowls. Many excellent academic and clinical instructors from MVC, area high schools, hospitals, clinics and medical centers contributed to this accomplishment."

The all-senior MVC ATEP quiz bowl team of Ben Snyder, Darrell Brooks, Jami Mayberry, and Sadie Smith (alternate) will represent the Mid-America Athletic Trainers' Association at the Fifth Annual National Athletic Training Quiz Bowl for the opportunity to become the 2013 National Athletic Training Quiz Bowl Champions.

The competition begins at 4:45 p.m. on Wednesday, June 26, at the South Convention Center of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nev.
