Slater school board approves 2013-14 calendar
The Slater Board of Education approved the calendar for the 2013-14 school year during their meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 19, in the school library.
The first day of school will be on August 20, while the last day of school will be on May 20, 2014. If needed, make-up days are set for May 21, 22, 23, 27, 28 and 29.
Putting snow days at the end of the calendar is a change from this year of using previously scheduled days off.
"There was more frustration with that than putting it at the end," Superintendent Terry Lorenz said.
Graduation will be on Sunday, May 18, 2014, even if there are make-up days.
"Their schedule will be done," said Lorenz of next year's seniors. "That's one of those senior perks I guess."
In new business, the board voted to sign a two-year agreement to continue with insurance agent Thomas McGee.
"They would like for us to sign a professional service agreement which is a two-year contract basically saying we are going to stay with Thomas McGee," Lorenz explained before the vote.
The agreement states Thomas McGee will continue to broker the best insurance deal possible for the school. Currently that means continuing in a self-funded insurance group with Midwest Public Risk (MPR). It currently consists of 21 school districts, down from 31 districts a year ago.
Although there is still confusion over the self-funded group and implications of the new national health care act, Lorenz said they had to make a choice.
"The only thing we know right now is it is going to cost more," Lorenz said.
In old business, the board also approved a request by Lorenz to get bids for moving the school concession stand into a room and out of a hallway.
In executive session, the board voted to renew a one year contract with elementary principal Sarah Marriot. They also approved Lance Barlow as assistant baseball coach.
