The Marshall wrestling team won most of the matches on the mat, but gave up too many default points Tuesday during a 41-39 NCMC loss to visiting Moberly.

The ninth-ranked Spartans didn't win a bout in the six lightest weight classes, but four openings provided all their points for a 24-12 lead.

The Owls got pins from 14th-ranked freshman Austin Ballard (106 pounds) and No. 7 freshman Aaron Sims (132) during that span.

Moberly's first victory came at 145 pounds, where eighth-rated junior Travis Gittemaier recorded an 18-2 technical fall. A pin followed by No. 6 senior Brennen Dixson to increase the Spartans' lead to 35-12.

Senior Nick Harper (160), ranked seventh at 152, picked up a Marshall win by fall, but the visitors got those points back on a pin by junior Blake Joiner (170) -- No. 5 at 160.

That would be the last victory for Moberly (18-4, 3-3 NCMC), but the 41-18 lead held up. Senior Austin Stickels (182) stopped his opponent in the first period and junior Tyler Eidson (195) used an escape from the down position to begin to third set for a 1-0 decision.

The Spartans were open in the final two weight classes.

The dual closed out the regular season for the Owls (6-10, 1-5), who now prepare for the Class 2, District 3 Tournament, Feb. 8-9 at Clinton.
