Slater Board of Education recognizes students, Board recognized by MSBA and Slater CTA

Thursday, January 17, 2013

At the Slater Board of Education meeting on Thursday, Jan. 17, Superintendent Terry Lorenz recognized Katlynn Shaw and Kaylee McEachern, vocal music students of Nancy Thompson, for being selected for the 2013 National Women's Honor Choir as part of the American Choral Directors Association national conference held in Dallas, Texas, in March.

The girls are fundraising and taking donations to pay for the trip. The school district does not pay for any expenses they will incur beyond the audition fee.

"Ms. Thompson said she's never in her career had anyone make the National Honor Choir and she's very excited about it. As well she should be," Lorenz said.

Brencton "Bo" Moreland and Larry Henke received Partner in Education community recognition certificates for going over and above what was expected by helping the custodial staff after school, according to Lorenz.

"These young men have been magnificent help for our custodial staff," Lorenz said. "I'd like to take this opportunity to personally thank these young men for the work that they've done. The custodial staff never stops talking about them."

The Missouri School Board Association and the Slater CTA recognized members of the Slater School Board of Education.

In other business, Eugene Stephens' bid was accepted to take care of snow removal.

Lorenz also brought to the board's attention an idea to move the concession stand in the high school to make it more secure.

In the principal's report, Lorenz noted that the student council is now managing a school supply machine "like a small business." Students can buy pens, pencils, paper or mechanical pencils from the machine.

The Wildcat Classic basketball tournament starts Monday, Jan. 21 at 4:30 p.m.

The election notice and sample ballot for board member elections on April 2, was approved.

Minutes of the last meeting, paying of the bills and payroll were also approved.
