Friday, January 11, 2013

MALTA BEND -- The Malta Bend basketball teams weren't able to keep up with Pilot Grove during a pair of non-conference home losses Thursday.

The Lady Tigers tried to fight back from a 35-6 halftime deficit, but fell short, 56-32. They won the third quarter by a 17-10 margin, sophomore Laci Warner providing five points off the bench.

Freshman Rileigh Grunden scored 12 points for Pilot Grove (4-8), which held out its best two players: sophomores Kerrigan Wessing and Melissa Schlotzhauer, who together account for 27.3 of the team's 48.1 points per game.

Junior Danielle Kiser had a game-high 14 points for Malta Bend (0-8).

The Tigers were out-scored 36-0 in the first quarter of the boys' game, which they lost, 87-40. Malta Bend tallied 20 points during the third period, but couldn't chip much into its 50-point halftime hole.

Senior Dylan Twenter tallied 21 points and senior Brandon Brown had 18 for Pilot Grove (10-3), which had five players in double figures.

The Tigers (1-9) got 18 points from senior Danny Kiehl, who hit five of the team's nine three-pointers, and 12 from sophomore Tyler Jenkins.

Malta Bend will be on the road today for a non-conference doubleheader at Norborne.
