Thursday, January 10, 2013

Sweet Springs Superintendent Donna Wright reported at a Board of Education meeting Wednesday evening that the district's schools would be receiving a security overhaul soon.

"We revised the crisis management plan last year," Wright told the board, "but in light of [the recent school shooting], the principals are looking at revising it again this year with a committee."

Wright requested a Board of Education member to volunteer on the crises management committee, and Robert Fuehring said he would take the position. Wright also told the board three different companies would visit the district next week to assess security issues. She suggested new security measures might involve locking all of the school doors.

During Wright's report to the board, she also communicated she had composed bids for an architect to design the school's track. She expects the bid to be fulfilled by March.

Elementary Principal Melanie Schlup announced the school's December attendance rate was 95.2 percent. She told the board that December's character word was "gratefulness," and a few sixth grade students filmed a video that will be shown to the student body about how to be grateful and show gratefulness.

Schlup announced to the board that the first fifth/sixth grade basketball game will be Monday, Jan. 28, in Concordia, followed by a home game Thursday, Jan. 31.

High School Principal David Reinke reported the school's December attendance rate was 95.7 percent. Due to snow days, the end of first semester was Jan.9, and grade cards will be released on parent portal and sent to students Jan. 16, according to Reinke.

Reinke said there will be a basketball jam Friday, Jan. 11 against Santa Fe. The Leeton Basketball Tournament will follow on Jan. 21-26.

Reinke announced the junior high Students of the Month were Emily Phillips and Justin Sims. The high school Students of the Month were Maria Leyva and Dane Branson.

Wright declared to the board that Governor Jay Nixon proclaimed Jan. 20-26 School Board Appreciation week. She thanked the board members for their service to the district. Board members received certificates for their dedication to the district.

The board announced that snow make-up days for the district will be Monday, Jan. 21, and Friday, May 17.

Board members voted in Executive Session to offer Wright a superintendent contract for the 2014-15 school year. Wright will receive the same percentage raise received by the staff for the 2014-15 school year.

All board members were present at the meeting. The next Sweet Springs Board of Education meeting will be Thursday, Feb. 7 at 8:15 p.m.
