FOREST CITY, Iowa -- Seven Missouri Valley College women wrestled their way to medals Saturday during the Waldorf Open at Forest City, Iowa.
Three Lady Vikings reached the finals -- sophomore Jaccara Winchester (130 pounds), junior Randi Beltz (136) and junior Frances Efiong -- but each had to settle for silver medals.
Winchester was pinned in the first period by Tiffany Sluik of Jamestown (N.D.), Beltz dropped a 1-0, 5-0 decision to King (N.Y.) junior Alli Reagan and the sixth-ranked Efiong lost a 1-0, 3-0 bout against Oklahoma City junior Stephanie Geltmacher.
Both Reagan and Geltmacher are ranked second in lower weight classes by the WCWA.
Valley had a pair of entries who reached third-place matches, No. 6 junior Brittany Jones (170) and sophomore Jessica Ulloa (191) both falling to Oklahoma City grapplers.
The Lady Vikings' lone winner in the medal matches was 10th-rated freshman Dalina Vuong (101), with a 2-0, 2-1 decision over No. 4 Oklahoma City junior Brianna Rahall for fifth place. Freshman Christine Bautista (109) dropped a 1-0, 2-0 tilt against Jamestown's Justine Palabrica.
Valley will be back in action Saturday and Sunday during the NWCA National Duals at Springfield, Ill.
OSKALOOSA, Iowa -- The Valley men sent three wrestlers to the William Penn Open at Oskaloosa, Iowa, Saturday, returning with one medal.
Freshman Kevin Bonilla (125 pounds) won his first two bouts to reach the semifinal round before being stopped by Northern Iowa freshman Dylan Peters, the eventual champion. A 17-6 major decision on the back side got Bonilla into the third-place match, where he lost a 10-6 decision to Grand View (Iowa) junior Andrew Clark.
Freshman Dalton Mudgett (149) won two bouts, one by fall, to get into the quarterfinals before dropping an 8-2 decision and was eliminated in his first consolation match. Freshman Justin Smith (285) was beaten in his first contest and split the next two.
The Vikings fell five spots to No. 10 in the latest NAIA poll, despite having nine ranked wrestlers -- six in the Top 10: junior Brian Bitney (133) at No. 4, junior Josh Manu (197) at No. 5, freshman Jake Ekster (149) and junior Daniel Mueller (285) at No. 6, and sophomore Logan Welch (133) and freshman Gabi Musallam (285) at No. 10.
Valley will head to Springfield, Ill., this weekend for the NWCA National Duals.
The Valley men's volleyball team will begin the season ranked eighth in the NAIA poll.
The Vikings spent the entire previous season in the top 10 while forging a 21-9 record. They closed the campaign with a loss in the MAMVIC West Tournament third-place match to Park, which is No. 1 in the pre-season rankings.
Valley will play an exhibition at No. 2 Graceland on Sunday before opening the regular season Jan. 19 against St. Xavier at Des Moines, Iowa. The Vikings' home debut will be Jan. 21 against sixth-ranked Missouri Baptist.
