Malta Bend Board of Education discuss possible co-op for baseball and softball
The Malta Bend Board of Education met on Wednesday, Dec. 12, to discuss a possible co-op with Sweet Springs for baseball and softball for the 2013-2014 school year.
"Our track numbers are low, and I know we have some kids that are going to want to play baseball," Superintendent Chuck Marcum said.
No action was taken on the issue, and Marcum said he "just wanted to put that bug in (the boards) ear" so they can make a decision at a later date.
"Extra curricular activities keep kids out of trouble," Marcum said.
Marcum also brought to the boards attention the possibility of finding a way to fund ITV classes for students.
"How do we get more kids involved in it? We push it, we do," Marcum said. "How are some of our kids going to pay for that?"
The ITV classes cost $285 for three credit hours.
The board approved playing the classified staff over the holiday break.
"It's been a tradition in the past that our classified get paid for the Christmas Holidays, and I recommend we continue to do that," Marcum said.
Classified staff includes bus drivers, cook, custodian, nurse and the secretary.
The board will also pay for the staff Christmas party at Arrow Rock Station.
Stipends for the girls and boys basketball coaches were approved.
Renewing the contract with MUSIC, the district insurance provider, was approved.
Minutes from the November meeting and paying of the bills were approved.
Larry Surber attended his first meeting as a new member of the board.
