The Marshall wrestling team had little success opening the NCMC campaign Tuesday during a 70-6 loss at Fulton, but was more competitive during a triangular on its home mat Wednesday, although didn't come away victorious.
The Hornets (1-0, 1-0 NCMC) dominated the action with eight pins in 11 bouts. The Owls' only points came via default in the 113-pound weight class, with just three matches going the distance.
Marshall senior Nick Harper (160 pounds) sustained his first loss of the season, 5-0 to senior Drew Benner. Junior Tyler Eidson (195) dropped a 9-2 decision to freshman Kobe Kaminsky and junior Tyler Morrison (145) was victim of a 19-6 major decision at the hands of freshman Andrew Baysinger.
The next days the Owls lost a non-conference match to Smith-Cotton, 42-32, and league rival Mexico, 52-27.
Marshall won five of 11 tilts against the Tigers (2-1), with pins by freshman Austin Ballard (106), junior Chris Stevenson (152), Harper and senior Berry Benedick (285). Freshman Aaron Sims (138) won by technical fall (16-0) and junior Canaan Heinzler (145) claimed a 7-4 decision.
The Bulldogs (2-0, 1-0) took seven of 11 bouts, six by fall. The Owls got pins from Sims, Harper and Benedick -- with Eidson posting a 5-2 decision.
Marshall (4-6, 0-2) will compete Friday in the Carrollton Invitational.
