Roland J. Steinmetz, 92, of rural Slater, died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012, at Big Bend Retreat in Slater.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012, at Slater Presbyterian Church with Rev. Pam Sebastian officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Slater City Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Michael Barnhill, Chris Harper, Ryan Harper, Michael Harper, Nicholas Harper and Jeff Walsh. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012, at Weiker Funeral Home in Slater. Memorials are suggested to the Slater Presbyterian Church.

Born Sept. 4, 1920, in rural Slater, he was the son of the late John F. and Louise Kreimer Steinmetz. On June 14, 1940, in Slater, he married Helen Kearns, who survives of the home. He was a member and elder of Slater Presbyterian Church. He was a U.S. Army-Air Corps. veteran of World War II and a member of the American legion Post No. 78 in Slater. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 56 years until his retirement. He also farmed in rural Slater.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, James (Jim) Steinmetz of Marshall; a daughter, Sandy Harper of rural Slater; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a great-great grandchild; five step-great grandchildren and a sister, Ruth Wright of Independence.

He was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.
