CHILLICOTHE -- The Marshall wrestling team began the 2012-13 campaign with two wins Thursday at the Chillicothe Triangular.
The Owls defeated Maysville, 54-21, but were more impressive during a closer 45-32 victory over the host Hornets.
Despite the wide final score, Marshall only won two of five bouts on the mat against the Wolverines (0-1), with 42 points coming from defaulted weight classes. The Owls led on points 24-15 even before senior Nick Harper, making his first appearance for the team after transferring from Park Hill, pinned his 170-pound opponent in 87 seconds.
Senior Berry Benedick closed out the match at 285 pounds by stopping his opponent in 1:31.
Chillicothe actually benefited from defaults, with an 18-6 edge in points, but the Owls took seven of 10 head-to-head contests.
Marshall got back-to-back pins from freshman Aaron Sims (138) and junior Canaan Heinzler (145) to pull in front, 18-17, but the Hornets won the next bout by fall. The lead changed hands again with a first-period pin by Harper, wrestling at 160 pounds, but Chillicothe (0-1) got a default at 170 and a decision at 182 for a 32-24 edge.
The Owls reeled off four straight wins to close the dual, starting with an overtime takedown by senior Austin Stickels (195) for a 3-1 decision over sophomore Luke Plummer.
Junior Tyler Eidson (220) put his foe down in the second period and both Benedick and freshman Austin Ballard (106) ended their bouts in under a minute and a half.
The Owls (2-0) were in Kansas City on Saturday for the Park Hill Tournament.
