Malta Bend swept in tourney action

HARDIN -- The Malta Bend boys' and girls' basketball teams were both beaten by Breckenridge during the second round of the Hardin-Central Tournament on Wednesday.

The Pirates won the boys' contest, 79-24, behind the 22 points of senior Jacob Uribe -- who made four shots in the first quarter for a 26-6 lead. Senior Hayden Rimmer and freshman Tristen McNelly each tallied 11 points for Norborne (2-0).

Senior Danny Kiehl and sophomore Tyler Jenkins combined for 15 points for the Tigers (0-2).

Senior Cheyenne Baxter's 24 points led the Lady Pirates to an 87-5 victory over Malta Bend. Norborne (2-0), which posted a 30-0 shutout in the opening period, got 16 points off the bench from freshman Megan Mertensmeyer.

The Lady Tigers (0-2) got four of their five points from sophomore Kayla Kiehl.

Malta Bend will close out tourney play Friday against Breckenridge.
