MARCELINE -- Senior Brett McGlothlin poured in 30 points for Marceline to begin the Slater boys' basketball season Tuesday with a 62-50 Lewis and Clark Conference road loss.
The Wildcats started off slowly under new head coach John Roberts, but got progressively better offensively -- scoring 19 points during the fourth quarter after tallying only 18 in the first half. However, the Purple couldn't cut much into the Tigers' 15-point lead heading into the final frame.
Senior Chase Hilsabeck and junior Daniel Haas contributed a combined 17 points for Marceline (1-0, 1-0 L&C).
Slater (0-1, 0-1) got 22 points and 14 rebounds from junior Mat Curren, with junior Caleb Pemberton adding 16 points.
"I love the competitiveness of this team," Roberts remarked. "We continue to get a little bit better every day and the future is very bright."
The Lady 'Cats trailed 35-6 at the break and were unable to get back into contention during a 67-25 loss at Marceline.
Junior Mary McCormick scored 19 points and senior Abby Gauthier tallied 14 for the Lady Tigers (1-0, 1-0), who shot 47.6 from the field -- compared to 19.6 percent for Slater.
Junior Mary Rose Gonzalez topped the Lady 'Cats (0-1, 0-1) with nine points and 14 rebounds, with junior Mary Anne Boston chipping in with eight points.
The Slater teams will compete next week in the Glasgow Tournament.
