Richard E. Werning, 78, of Higginsville, died on Monday, Nov. 12, 2012, at Meyer Care Center in Higginsville.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 16, 2012, at Salem United Church of Christ,1500 N. Main St. in Higginsville with Pastor Betty Thaller and Rev. Kathleen Knehans officiating. Doris Jane will serve as organist. Interment will be in Salem Cemetery in Higginsville.

The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Church. The Family suggests memorials to Family Choice. Born Sunday, June 24, 1934, in Higginsville, he was the son of the late Charles Werning and the late Ida (Tempel) Werning. On Oct. 9, 1954, he married Grace Begemann, who survives of the home. He grew up on the family farm and later owned and operated his own farm. He operated the Werning Bus Service for a number of years, as well as operating Werning's MFA Service Station, where he retired in 2006. He was a lifelong resident of Higginsville and a member of Salem United Church of Christ. He was a former member of the Higginsville Chapter of DeMolay and a 1952 graduate of Higginsville High School.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Ronald Werning and Paul Werning, both of Higginsville; one daughter, Jane Coleman of Marshall; eight grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, John, Ralph and Elmer Werning; and one sister, Marie Mittelhauser.
