On Thursday, Nov. 8, Malta Bend School held a Veterans Day program. Several veterans from American Legion Post No. 558 attended, along with Charlie Guthrie, veteran and veterans advocate, from Slater. The program began with Guthrie and Jim Brown placing a POW-MIA banner on an empty chair to honor the Prisoners of War and Missing in Action who never returned from battle.

Next, the Malta Bend FFA members carried flags into the gym as Guthrie explained what each flag signified. After The Pledge of Allegiance, Kayla Kiehl and David Ruch gave speeches they wrote specifically for the event. The eighth-grade class spoke about the meaning of Veterans Day, and Stormie Young read "Veterans Day" by Mark Garcia. The elementary students sang a few patriotic songs and later gave cards they had made to the attending veterans. The program closed with Guthrie and Brown removing the POW-MIA banner from the empty chair to signify that those soldiers would never be forgotten. The students and staff then filed past the veterans, handing them cards and shaking their hands to thank them for their service.

Students from Orearville School also attended the program.
