Lady Vikings second in Iowa tourney

Monday, November 5, 2012

DES MOINES -- The Missouri Valley College women's basketball team opened the 2013 by splitting a pair of games over the weekend to finish second in the Mount Mercy Tournament at Des Moines.

The Lady Vikings got it started Friday with a 78-60 victory over the host team, as junior transfer Alexis Sweet scored 20 points in her debut. Valley opened the second half with a 13-2 run, a three-pointer from senior Lindsi Jackson extending the lead to 51-37 with 12:24 left.

Sweet and senior Cara Clark each had a pair of buckets during the surge.

Senior Brooke Quigley tallied 23 points and junior Amanda Frost had 20 for the Lady Mustangs (0-1), who were out-shot 47.5 to 29.0 percent from the field and beaten on the boards by a 40-30 margin.

Jackson finished with 17 points, with Clark and senior Sami Jackson each tallying 10 for the Lady Vikings.

In Saturday's title contest against Grand View (Iowa), the numbers were almost identically flipped during Valley's 63-48 loss to the other Lady Vikings in the field.

A steal and fast break by Sami Jackson had MVC down by only a point with 8:34 left in the game, but Grand View answered with a 16-2 run as senior Amy Vos scored eight points.

Valley suffered a field-goal shooting deficit of 38.9 to 29.5 percent and was edged on the boards, 43-31.

Junior Shelbie Beatty scored a game-high 17 points and senior Morgan Hamner added 16 points and eight rebounds for Grand View (2-0).

Sweet paced Valley with 14 points and eight boards.

The Lady Vikings (1-1) will be on the road Wednesday at William Woods.
