Hastings (Neb.) built a nine-point lead and sank eight of nine free throws during the second half to keep the host Missouri Valley College men's basketball team at bay for a 75-60 non-conference decision in Friday's season opener.
The Broncos out-shot Valley during the contest, 50.9 to 42.9 percent, and held a 37-26 rebounding edge. Hastings (1-0) got 14 points from senior Dane Bacon, with 6-foot-8 senior Jake Marvin contributing 12 points and a game-high nine boards and three assists.
Seniors Michael Connor and James Pope topped the Vikings (0-1) with 11 points each. Freshman Jordan Epps had six rebounds, four steals and three assists.
Valley will be at home Tuesday to face Hannibal-LaGrange.
