MEXICO -- The Marshall cross country team's indefatigable duo of junior Roxana Avalos and sophomore Ben Sporleder finished in the medal hunt Saturday during the NCMC Championships at Mexico.

Sporleder came in 12th among 43 runners in the boys' varsity division, the Owls entering a full squad for the first time this season and placing seventh with 143 points. Junior James Elfrink (20:24) wound up 23rd and sophomore Zach Petzoldt (21:35) was 29th, knocking 11 seconds off the time he posted in the course during last year's district meet.

Rounding out Marshall's scoring were freshman Logan Davis (22:51) and sophomore Caleb Jarvis (23:22), in 39th and 40th place respectively.

Avalos (23:15) was 14th among 35 varsity girls, with a time nearly two minutes faster than she recorded on the course a year ago. Competing on the varsity for the first time, sophomore Abigail Henke (24:20) tied her personal record while placing 17th.

Kirksville senior Andrew Gordon (16:57) won the boys' race, with Mexico edging Moberly for the team title, 55 to 49 points. The Lady Spartans (53 points) won the girls' crown, although Fulton senior Jenny McCarthy (19:55) was the gold medalist.

Marshall is back in action today at the Richmond Invitational.
