Construction of Bridge No. 46 in the Malta Bend road district is moving smoothly, according to Saline County Commissioners.
During a regular session Thursday, Oct. 11, Southern District Commissioner Monte Fenner provided updates on the project.
"Early this morning, I went up to Bridge 46," he said. "They have probably two-thirds of the bridge supports in, and it looks like they're ready to put on the floor."
The bridge is apparently four to five feet higher than the previous structure to provide ample space for water.
"We had to stretch out the build-up quite a ways in order to allow enough water to go under the bridge so it would not back up on the farmer's land, and force their pasture under water or their crops ...," Norvelle Brown, Northern District commissioner, added.
C&C Construction of Pilot Grove began the project Sept. 17, with what Brown believed was a 60-day completion goal.
"Not even a month later, and they're trucking right along," he said.
Little regular business was conducted other than the pre-approval of this week's payroll. Presiding Commissioner Tom Stallings was attending an out-of-town meeting that reportedly focuses on workforce development. The next regular session is scheduled at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16.
