Marshall's Sullivan misses state cut

Tuesday, October 9, 2012

CHILLICOTHE -- Marshall junior Lindsey Sullivan came within three stokes of qualifying for the MSHSAA Class 1 Girls' Golf Championships during Monday's Section 3 Tournament at Chillicothe.

Sullivan needed to finish in the top 15 to make the state field, but wound up tied for 20th place with a 104.

Her round got off to a rough start from the No. 10 hole at Green Hills Golf Course, when she shot an eight on a par four. However, she birdied par-three No. 11 before putting up a pair of double bogeys. Back-to-back bogeys and a par, along with a double and a bogey going out, had her in solid position with a 12-over 48.

Sullivan was unable to make a charge on the front nine, though. Even with three bogeys, she was 10 over heading to the No. 7 hole, where she posted an 11 on the par five to fall out of contention.

Her final score at 29 over par matched her season-best performance over 18 holes, Sept. 17 at the California Tournament.

Trenton (390 points) and Moberly (397) took the top two spots to advance to the state tournament, Oct. 15-16 at Meadow Lake Acres near Jefferson City, while Lady Spartans sophomore Nichole Marquis -- the District 5 champion -- won the individual gold medal by six strokes with an eight-over 80.

The Lady Owls will conclude their season Wednesday with the NCMC Tournament at Moberly.
