Tuesday, October 9, 2012

CLINTON -- Marshall sophomore Ben Sporleder captured his seventh medal in as many cross country meets Saturday in the Clinton Invitational.

Sporleder, a transfer from Maryville, covered the course at Artesian Park in 19:07 to place 12th in a field of 78 runners. The other varsity entries for the Owls, junior James Elfrink (21:35) and sophomore Zach Petzoldt (21:39) -- who knocked nearly two-and-a-half minutes from his previous time on the course -- wound up 48th and 50th respectively.

The lone Marshall girls' varsity entry, junior Roxana Avolos (23:43), improved by almost two minutes to place 14th for her sixth medal of the season. Sophomore Abigail Henke (25:05) won her third junior varsity girls race, while sophomore Caleb Jarvis (22:50) was ninth in the JV boys' division.

The Owls will head to Mexico on Saturday for the NCMC Championships.
