OLATHE, Kan. -- The 13th-ranked Missouri Valley College men's soccer team was beaten in its Heart of America Conference debut Saturday at No. 8 MidAmerica Nazarene, 1-0.
The Pioneers (8-0-4, 1-0 HAAC) got on the board in the 20th minute of the first half when sophomore Aurelian Norest headed in a pass from senior Luke Pontin. The Vikings got off five shots on goal, but all were stopped by junior Chris Ericksson, posting his fourth shutout of the season.
Junior Alberto Linan Gomez took three shots and junior Josh Wells made five saves for Valley (5-3-1, 0-1), which hosts Culver-Stockton on Saturday.
Junior Floxy Owere's "golden goal" Saturday gave the Valley women's soccer team a 2-1 overtime victory at Heart of America Conference rival MidAmerica Nazarene.
Owere scored with four seconds remaining in the extra period off a corner kick from sophomore Kendra Clamors. That snapped a 56-minute scoreless drought for both teams.
The Lady Pioneers (5-5, 0-1 HAAC) took a lead in the 38th minute on a shot from sophomore Kara Collins, but MVC tied the contest six minutes later on junior Cecilee Kidd's first goal of the season.
The Lady Vikings lost a 5-1 non-conference match Thursday at NCAA Division II member Lindenwood. Junior Bailey Cody and freshman Haley Stewart each scored two goals as the Lady Lions (4-5-1) snapped a three-match losing streak.
Valley's lone goal came from freshman Haley Ennis in the 19th minute of the second half.
The Lady Vikings (6-4, 1-0) will play at home Saturday against Culver-Stockton.
The Valley women's volleyball team was unable to get its offense going Tuesday during a 25-16, 25-14, 25-21 Heart of America Conference home loss to Baker.
The Lady Vikings had 25 attack errors for a hitting efficiency of .000. Senior Savannah Smith and junior Crystal Simon combined for 15 kills to pace the Lady Wildcats (13-9, 3-1 HAAC).
Junior Ana Calito knocked down nine shots and dug up 12, while senior Jessica Gates came up with 25 saves, for Valley.
The Lady Vikings (8-10, 1-4) play Tuesday at Central Methodist.
CHICAGO -- The Valley men's cross country squad placed 28th out of 47 teams Saturday in the 40th annual Sean Earl Loyola Lakefront Invitational at Chicago.
Junior Matt Leonard (27:21) came in 161st and junior Alex Avilez (27:35) was 183rd in a field of 456 runners as the Vikings pulled 886 points. Wisconsin won the meet with 51 points.
The Valley women had 1,189 points to finish 38th out of 51 teams, with junior Amanda Buhr (20:26) placing 246th among 514 entries. McMasters (Ill.) took the women's crown with 105 points.
The next competition for the Vikings will be the Fast Cats Classic, Oct. 13 at Owensboro, Ky.
FULTON -- The MVC women's golf team took fifth place this week at the William Woods Invitational in Fulton.
Freshman Crystal Shaffer came in 20th with a 190 over two rounds on the Tanglewood Golf Club course as the Lady Vikings tallied 827 points.
The Valley men were seventh with a 613, led by junior Josh Coletti at 151 to tie for 14th place.
William Woods won both the men's (575 points) and women's (615) titles.
The Vikings will close out the fall season Oct. 22-23 by hosting the MVC Invitational at Indian Foothills Golf Course.
The unbeaten Missouri Valley football team moved up from fourth to No. 3 in this week's NAIA rankings. The Vikings (5-0) are idle this week and will be at home Oct. 13 to take on 12th-ranked Heart of America Conference foe Benedictine, which handed them their only regular season loss a year ago.
