The 13th-ranked Missouri Valley College men's soccer team came out of the Sooner State last weekend with two more wins to its credit.
Junior Nicholas Alexander scored back-to-back goals within three minutes of each other midway through the second half Friday to give the Vikings a 2-1 non-conference decision at Oklahoma Baptist. The Bison (3-3) had taken the lead on a shot by freshman Rodrigo Lopes in the ninth minute of the period.
Valley rallied from an early 2-0 deficit Saturday at Rogers State (Okla.) to claim a 3-2 victory. The Hillcats (4-5) pulled in front on goals by sophomores Mohammed Shaban and Necos Collins in the opening 13 minutes.
Junior Declan Price led the Vikings' comeback, starting with his one-touch pass to Alexander for the first goal. Price tied the contest with five minutes remaining in the first half and passed out of a double-team to junior Miguel Jiminez for the go-ahead goal a minute later.
Junior Josh Wells came up with four second-half goals to preserve the lead for Valley (5-2-1).
The Vikings take a three-match win streak into Saturday's Heart of America Conference opener at MidAmerica Nazarene.
The Valley women's soccer team came out of its Oklahoma swing with a pair of losses.
Freshman Paula Vicenzo pulled off the hat trick with three goals Friday during a 4-1 home win for Oklahoma Baptist (2-4). The Lady Vikings didn't score until late in the contest, on a shot from sophomore Courtney Devlin.
Valley was shut out for the first time this season Saturday at Rogers State (Okla.), 2-0. Junior Jordan Harris made seven stops for the Lady 'Cats (8-1), who got second-half goals from sophomore Jordan Beasley and freshman Rachel Coen.
The Lady Vikings (5-3) begin HAAC play Saturday at MidAmerica Nazarene.
The MVC women's volleyball team dropped its third Heart of America Conference match in a row Tuesday with a 25-23, 25-10, 22-25, 25-18 setback at the hands of Graceland.
Senior Moriah Jones had 15 kills and junior Denise Atualevao came up with 33 digs for the Lady Yellowjackets (10-3, 3-1 HAAC). Junior Ana Calito topped the Lady Vikings by knocking down 15 shots.
Valley was coming off a split of four matches over the weekend in the Kansas Wesleyan Tournament. The Lady Vikings opened and closed the meet with losses -- 25-21, 25-20, 25-22 to Friends (Kan.) and 25-13, 25-13, 25-22 to the host team -- with a pair of wins: beating St. Mary's (Kan.), 25-16, 25-22, 25-12, and McPherson (Kan.), 25-20, 25-7, 20-25, 27-25.
Two Valley players earned Heart of America Conference "player of the week" honors for their performances. Junior Tarrah Sweet was named the league's top setter for her 130 assists, while senior Jessica Gates' average of 4.6 digs per set won her the libero award.
The Lady Vikings won two matches Thursday at the Lindenwood-Belleville (Ill.) Triangular. Calito had 13 kills, 12 digs and three aces and junior Jada Hollinshead added 13 spikes during a 25-22, 28-30, 25-21, 25-16 decision over Oakland (Mich.).
During a 20-25, 27-25, 28-26, 25-17 victory over the host Lynx, Valley got 10 kills and four blocks from sophomore Megan Hardin and 21 digs by Gates.
The Lady Vikings (8-9, 1-3) return home Tuesday for a league match against Baker.
WICHITA, Kan. -- Freshman Mitsuko Hiew of Geneva, Switzerland, reached the semifinal round in singles play over the weekend at the ITA Central West Regional Tournament in Wichita, Kan.
The fourth-seeded Hiew won three matches in straight sets before running up against the No. 1 seed, Evangel sophomore Amy Grossklag, in the semis. Grossklag battled to a 7-5, 7-5 decision over Hiew before sweeping her opponent in the championship match.
In doubles, sophomore Katelyn Barr and freshman Jenna Roller won their opening contest before meeting Grossklag and freshman Jenna Elliot in the quarterfinals, losing 8-0. The Lady Crusaders' duo went on to take the title.
All of the Vikings made it through the first round in men's play, with freshman Pablo Goicochea of Lima, Peru, winning three times until reaching the quarterfinals. He lost the first set to Graceland sophomore David Uquillas, but had to withdraw with a 5-0 lead in the second frame.
Freshmen Wesley Ng and Brock Hughes won one match to get to the doubles quarterfinals before falling to a combo from Bethany (Kan.), 8-5.
The meet concluded the brief fall campaign for Valley, which resumes play in the spring.
MAYETTA, Kan. -- Both the Valley men's and women's golf teams placed sixth in the Baker Fall Tournament at Mayetta, Kan.
The MVC men scored 638 points, with junior Brodie McGregor sharing ninth-place with a two-round tally of 155 on the par-72 Firekeeper Golf Course. Leading the Lady Vikings, who had 355 points, was freshman Crystan Shaffer with a 218 for 27th place.
Southwestern (Kan.) won the men's title with a 597, while William Jewell shot 692 for the women's crown.
Valley will compete Monday and Tuesday in the William Woods Invitational at Fulton.
