The Marshall girls' tennis team didn't have to labor much on Labor Day to notch its fifth straight win to open the fall season.
The Lady Owls won four matches by 8-0 scores Monday during an 8-1 non-conference home win over Richmond. The only win for the Lady Spartans (3-3) came at No. 1 singles, where sophomore Bailey Busse got the best of sophomore Molly Evans, 8-3.
There were a couple of other competitive singles matches, but Marshall prevailed behind freshman Taylor Crawford (8-4) and junior Payton Beeler (8-3). Senior Stephanie Markes won by an 8-1 margin at No. 2, while juniors Amanda Harrelson and Idalia Aguilar rolled to 8-0 shutouts.
Evans and Markes took the No. 1 doubles match against Busse and senior Carrie Smith, 8-6, but the Lady Owls' other combos -- Crawford and Beeler at No. 2 and Harrelson and Aguilar at No. 3 -- posted 8-0 wins.
Marshall won the junior varsity tilt, 10-0, with 6-0 shutouts from four double teams.
"The girls played well overall," remarked MHS head coach Susan Carney. "We are gaining more experience every match and see more of what to work on in practice."
The Lady Owls (5-0) host NCMC foe Moberly today for their annual fundraising barbecue, starting at 4 p.m.
