John Joseph Hughes, 90, of Marshall, died Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2012, at Sweet Springs Villa in Sweet Springs.

He was born April 7, 1920. He was the son of the late John Hughes and Mary Hayden Hughes. On Sept. 18, 1953, he married Dorothy Durrett Drew, who preceded him in death on June 30, 1994. He had lived in Marshall from 1952 until the time of his death. He was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church in Marshall. He was a retired auto race promoter and radio broadcaster. He served in the U.S. Marine Corp. during World War II, and served in the South Pacific and China from 1942 until 1946.
He is survived by one daughter, Susan M. Hughes and her partner, David Clause, of Marshall; one grandson, John Jason Mackey and his wife, Bobbie; and two great-grandchildren, Jesseray Dakota Mackey and Maya Marie Mackey.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters.
