The Marshall softball team took a two-run lead into the sixth inning Monday, but a 13-run rally by Warsaw led to an early end of the non-conference contest in the Lyon Bowl, 17-7.
The Lady Owls scored five runs in the bottom of the third inning, which began with singles by sophomore Hayley Campbell and senior Abby Crawford. An error with the bases loaded let in two runs, while singles by sophomores Cheyenne Griffitt and Mackenzie Cochran plated two more runs.
Senior Raha Shahabzada blanked the Lady Wildcats through the first three frames, but the warning signs of impending trouble began to appear in the fourth -- when three Marshall errors led to a run.
Freshman Kylie McRoberts stroked a two-run double in the fifth as Warsaw narrowed the margin to 6-4. It was in the next frame that things fell apart for the Lady Owls.
Senior Mackensie Walker doubled to lead off the inning and scored on freshman Payton Adair's single. A single and walk loaded the bases with one out, Marshall clinging to a one-run lead before back-to-back boots put it behind.
Junior Brooklyn Hetherington singled in a run, another came in on a fielder's choice and Walker cleared the loaded bases with a double. Senior Jennifer Flores delivered an RBI single, an error put a second runner on base and freshman Raven Caswell knocked in a run with a single.
The final two runs of the offensive explosion came on sophomore Megan Brown's single.
Two walks and two-out singles by sophomore Shelby Dawson and senior Jessica Johnson produced a run for the Lady Owls in their half of the sixth, but the bases were left loaded.
McRoberts led the Lady Wildcats (1-2) with four RBIs.
Crawford and Dawson each had a pair of hits for Marshall (1-5), which resumes NCMC play today at Boonville.
