Although genealogist Marvin Wilhite is humble about his work, Marshall Public Library officials, genealogical supporters and the City of Marshall felt it was time to honor him.
With a handful of supporters standing by, Marshall Mayor Mark Gooden proclaimed Monday, July 16, 2012, as Marvin Wilhite Day, saying Wilhite's years of voluntarily service have been marked by exemplary dedication to the best interests of this community.
Prior to the proclamation, MPL Director Amy Crump presented Wilhite with a National Genealogical Society Award of Merit. She stated since 2001, he has logged more than 15,000 volunteer hours researching, recording findings and assisting people in finding their family histories.
"He's an expert at discovering lost stories from the past," Crump said.
Crump noted a time that Wilhite, over the phone, walked a researcher through a cemetery to find a grave. He's assisted countless inquiries from coast to coast, as well as local inquiries.
Wilhite is a member of Saline County Historic Society and volunteers at the Maggie Duggins Genealogy Room at MPL.
