Former Marshall resident noted for sports publications

Friday, June 29, 2012

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn University (Kan.) Sports Information Office was recognized earlier this month for having three "best in the nation" College Division media guides by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

The Ichabods football and Lady Blues softball media guides were designed by sports information director Gene Cassell, a Marshall native and 1997 Northwest Missouri State graduate. The Washburn baseball media guide was produced by assistant SID Jeremy Wangler.

The school also received second-place honors for its women's soccer publication and fifth place for the men's basketball guide, both designed by Cassell, for non-NCAA Division I programs.

Since assuming his position in 1998, Cassell has overseen an office which has received 80 citations for excellence -- including 32 "best" awards, 20 second-place showings and nine top cover honors.
