Doreen was born in 1926 to August and Nora Hartman in Florence on March 1,1926. She graduated from Stover High School, where she played volleyball. After high school Doreen received her teaching certificate from Central Missouri State in Warrensburg and went on to teach at Blackjack Elementary near Florence. She was active in the Florence Methodist Church, where she played the organ on Sundays and met her future husband, A. J. McRoberts who was serving as the church minister. Years later, when her children were older she taught elementary school in Clark, where she made sure every student had an appreciation for music.
In 1946, Doreen and A. J. were married in Jewett City, Conn., where he was attending Hartford Seminary School. In 1950, they moved to Columbia, where she became active in the community, donating her time to the Lee School PTA, Mother's Forum, Mother Singers, Saturday Nighters' dance club and Calvary Episcopal Church. She also was interested in Tiger Sports, particularly basketball and football and for many years never missed a game. Her hobbies included sewing, travel (summer vacations with her family), cooking, musicals and theatre. She and A. J. frequently attended productions at the Lyceum Theater in Arrow Rock. Every summer she looked forward to attending the Schroeder Family Reunion. Every election, local or national, she worked as an election judge; the main reason to see neighbors and greet newcomers to the East Campus neighborhood.
Her beaming smile, infectious laugh and loving heart endeared her to all. Doreen loved sharing laughs and great conversations, with family and friends at her kitchen table, on her front porch or at church.
Doreen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 65 years, Andrew Jackson McRoberts, IV (April 15, 2012), and her daughter, Mary Katherine McRoberts (1954).
Her son Andy, daughter-in-law Melissa and beloved grandson Jack McRoberts of Highland Park, TX survive her along with her daughter Anne Elizabeth McRoberts of Prairie Village, KS. Her sister and brother also survive her -- Leona Selken of Smithton, MO and Dennis Hartman (Ann) of Blacksburg, VA along with several and nephews.
