Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 26, 2012, at South Joplin Christian Church, 1901 S. Pearl, in Joplin, with Rev. Jill Michel officiating. Interment of cremains will be held in Slater Cemetery, Slater. The family received friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday, June 25, 2012, at Clark Funeral Home in Neosho. Born Nov. 29, 1938, in Marshall, he was the son of the late Henry Hardin Akeman and F. Elizabeth (Reynolds) Akeman. He was a retired minister of the Christian Church, Disciples of Christ. In his 45 years of ordained ministry, he pastored many congregations throughout Missouri and the Midwest, and participated in a number of civic and charitable organizations. He loved of the outdoors, and enjoyed fishing, canoeing, reading and gardening.
He is survived by his wife Judy (Grimes) Akeman; three children, Kemp Akeman and his wife, Marty, of Ft. Worth, Texas, Seth Berry and his wife, Ellen, of Leawood, Kan., and Suzanne Berry of Kansas City; and four grandchildren: Robert Akeman and his wife, Meghan, Rachel Horne and her husband, Jason, Nora Berry and Ryan Thomas.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, O.A. Kemper Jr.; a daughter, Karen Thomas; and a grandson, Joseph Akeman.
