Rachel W. Sterrett
Rachel W. Sterrett, 95, of Newberg, Ore., formerly of Slater, died Tuesday, June 19, 2012, at Newberg Care Home.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, June 27, 2012, at Slater Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Pam Sebastian officiating. Burial will be in the Slater City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 until 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Church. Memorials are suggested to Slater Presbyterian Church or Gideons International, in care of Weiker Funeral Home in Slater.
Born June 23, 1916, in Wilson, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Frank J. and Mary Elizabeth Deans Finch. On Dec. 19, 1936, in Washington, D.C., she married William W. Sterrett, who preceded her in death on June 20,1999. She was a member of Slater Presbyterian Church, where she sang in the church choir. She and her family moved to Washington, D.C. in 1929, and she attended secretarial school. She was employed with the Procurement Division of the Treasury Department, and later was secretary to Representative Griswold of Wisconsin. He moved to Slater with her husband following World War II, and resided there until moving to Oregon in 2002.
She is survived by two sons, Joseph Burks Sterrett and his wife, Catherine, of Sherwood, Ore., and James Roger Sterrett and his wife, Mary, of Balzac, Alberta, Canada; three grandchildren, Michael Wilson Sterrett and his wife, Laura, of Nashua, N.H., Suzanne Elizabeth Le and her husband, Phuong, of Sherwood, Ore., and Russell William Sterrett of Balzac, Alberta, Canada; and five great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers and sisters.
