Not much has slowed down senior Alan Magana during his rookie year in boys' tennis, but the flu bug got him Monday.
Magana and his partner, senior Anthony Van, placed second in the Class 1, District 8 Individual Tournament on Saturday and were scheduled to play a team from Missouri Military Academy for a shot at advancing to the MSHSAA Championships during Monday's sectional at Marshall.
However, Magana's illness forced the Owls to default to senior Alejandro Macias and sophomore Alan Avila. In the other sectional contest, juniors Joshua Hurt and Trevor Steinbeck of Fulton defeated the Osage duo of sophomore Ryan Curran and senior Ryan Garton to qualify for the state meet.
In singles competition, Osage sophomore Thomas Uhl and Helias senior Nick Kroeger won their matches to move on.
Marshall hopes to be at full strength Saturday for the team sectional at St. Louis. The Owls, who won the District 8 title, take on host Mary Institute/Country Day School in the semifinal round. The other semi will pit Fulton against St. Dominic of O'Fallon, with the winner of the finals going to the state team tournament May 24 at Springfield.
