Senior Alan Magana may have come late to tennis and senior Anthony Van missed most of last season, but together they proved formidable as a doubles pair.

Marshall's No. 2 entry won its first three matches Saturday before losing in the finals of the Class 1, District 8 Individual Tournament on the Owls' home court, allowing it to move on to the next stage of the playoff system.

Magana and Van ripped through the preliminaries with straight-set victories, defeating junior Jay Kim and Tony Eom of Sacred Heart, 6-0, 6-1, and Boonville seniors Caleb James and Dillon Colbert, 6-0, 6-0, to reach the semifinal round.

A 6-2, 6-2 victory over senior Patrick Remis and junior Zach Yungbluth of Helias clinched a spot in the sectional meet. Magana and Van took its only loss in the championship tilt against sophomore Ryan Curran and senior Ryan Garton of Osage, 7-5, 6-1, to finish in second place.

The Owls' No. 1 doubles team of freshman Gerritt Murphy and junior Trent Clause also medaled, following a first-round bye with a 6-1, 6-0 win over senior Calvin Heintz and freshman Theron Howe of the Columbia Independent School.

However, Curran and Garton defeated the Murphy-Clause duo in the semifinals, 6-2, 7-5, and Remis-Yungbluth won the third-place match, 10-7.

Marshall's singles entries came from the fifth and sixth slots in the team's regular line-up, but both posted first-round wins: junior Jacob Ringlen getting by Sacred Heart senior Chan Ki, 6-4, 6-0, and junior Ryan Vereyken posting a 6-1, 6-3 decision over the Gremlins' No. 1, sophomore Kyung Oh.

Both of the Owls were eliminated in the quarterfinal round, Ringlen falling to Columbia Independent freshman No. 1 Vaughn Mueller, 7-5, 6-3, and Vereyken blanked by Osage's No. 2, sophomore Adam Keith, 6-0, 6-0.

The qualifiers from Districts 7 and 8 will play in the Section 4 Tournament today in Marshall, with the top two in both singles and doubles advancing to the MSHSAA Class 1 Individual Tournament at Springfield on May 25.

The first opponent for Magana and Van is the district champion combo from Missouri Military Academy. Osage and Fulton meet in the other semifinal.

Meanwhile, the Owls (14-5) will head to St. Louis as a group Saturday for the Section 4 Team Tournament, with a meeting with District 7 champion Mary Institute/Country Day School in the semifinal round.
