The Marshall boys' tennis team notched a 5-1 victory over visiting Columbia Independent School in Tuesday's semifinal round of the Class 1, District 8 Team Tournament.
The win sent the second-seeded Owls (13-5) into a showdown today at No. 1 seed School of the Osage for the district crown. The Indians knocked off Helias in their semi, 5-2.
Other than some difficulty in the first set by senior Alan Magana during his 7-5, 6-0 decision over freshman Theron Howe at No. 3 singles, Marshall's four other wins -- by senior Anthony Van (6-0, 6-1) and juniors Trent Clause (6-1, 6-1), Jacob Ringlen (6-0, 6-3) and Ryan Vereyken (6-0, 6-0) -- were relatively easy.
The Lions (8-6) got their lone win at No. 1 singles, where freshman Vaughan Mueller got by freshman Gerritt Murphy, 6-2, 6-2.
Osage won the district title last year, Marshall having been knocked out in the semifinal round by Helias.
