Friday, April 27, 2012

WARRENSBURG -- Unbeaten Warrensburg handed the Marshall boys' tennis team its first 9-0 shutout loss of the season Wednesday.

"It was closer than it appeared," noted MHS head coach Susan Carney, pointing to a pair of tiebreakers won by the host Tigers (10-0) in singles. Sophomore Nathan Fernquist came from behind for a 2-6, 6-6, 7-6 (10-6) decision over junior Jacob Ringlen at No. 5 and senior Corey Chaplin held off senior Anthony Van at No. 4, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (13-11).

Two of the doubles matches also went to the wire, senior Alan Magana and Van at No. 1 and Ringlen and junior Ryan Vereyken dropping 8-6 decisions.

The Owls (8-3) will host the rescheduled Marshall Tournament on Wednesday.
