Cassie Eddy performs with her school band Wednesday, April 25, during "Fine Arts Night" at Slater Schools. This was the first annual fine arts event, which served as a department fundraiser to draw support for new instruments, uniforms and scholarships.

The high school band is new this year, and this past year very few students participated in elementary and junior high band, according to Gayle Stevens, the director of bands at Slater Schools.

Stevens started the fifth grade band this year as well, saying she hopes it continues to grow and feels it's a positive experience for students.

"We are now recruiting in the fourth grade ..." she noted.

Many Slater students are learning an instrument for the first time, and the program will host an instrument petting zoo next week.

"Fine Arts Night" also showcased visual art, and provided games and food for patrons.
