SENATOBIA, Miss. -- The Missouri Valley College men's rodeo team won three events last week at the Northwest Mississippi Community College Rodeo at Senatobia, clinching its fifth straight NIRA Ozark Region title.
The Vikings' seventh title of the season, with 680 points to Southern Arkansas' 640, put extra distance between them and main contender Tennessee-Martin. The 1,783-point spread between the two is insurmountable with one rodeo remaining in the regular season, the second Northwest Mississippi CC meet starting today.
Valley got 240 of its points in bareback riding, where senior Tanner Aus took first place and senior Will Crain fourth. Junior Jordan Corrigan added 138 by winning saddle bronc riding and the duo of freshman Brandon Barringer and senior Kasey Chism captured the team roping crown, although didn't factor into the team scoring.
A second place showing by junior Ben Runyon and Southern Arkansas' Justin Johnson meant 150 points for Valley, with another 140 from sophomore Hunter Runyon for second in steer wrestling.
Sophomore Shyanne Masters and junior Korah Agre finished 1-2 in the women's all-around race, with Agre's tie for second place with junior teammates Lauren Struxness and Megan Baxter was good for half the team's 180 points for fourth place.
Sophomore Charity Houk won goat tying, with Masters third.
Southern Arkansas (290 points) and Tennessee-Martin (255) took the top two spots and head into the finale fighting for first place, with a margin of only 190 points between them.
