HANNIBAL -- Sophomore Eric Hugenberg tossed a five-hit shutout at the Marshall baseball team Tuesday to give Hannibal a 5-0 NCMC home win.
For the first two innings, MHS senior Collin Porter matched Hugenberg, but the Pirates broke through in the bottom of the third. Senior Tyler Wisdom singled with one out, with a walk and an error allowing him to score. Sophomore Jordan Wilson's base hit brought in the frame's second run.
Senior Cody Mundle got a one-out single for Hannibal in the fourth, with a passed ball and dropped third strike putting runners on the corner. Mundle scored on an error and Hugenberg singled to load the bases, but Porter got out of the jam without further damage.
Junior Zach Bishop took over on the mound for the Owls in the fifth, but singles by junior Trevor Anderson and Wisdom followed by junior Dalton Powell's double plated a run -- with a second one crossing on a wild pitch.
That was all for the Pirates (7-6, 6-4 NCMC), but it was enough for Hugenberg, who stranded nine Marshall runners. The Owls' only extra-base hit was a fifth-inning double by senior Collin Brennan.
The loss drops Marshall (10-5, 5-3) to second place in the league standings to Kirksville by a half-game heading into Thursday's clash at Boonville.
