ST. LOUIS -- Junior Kim Lopez and sophomore Ashley Cobern picked up complete-game victories from the rubber Monday as the Missouri Valley College softball team took both ends of a non-conference doubleheader at Missouri Baptist, 7-2 and 8-2.
Lopez cracked a two-run homer in the top of the fourth inning to give the Lady Vikings a 4-2 lead in the first game, in which they banged out 13 hits. Valley scored three more runs during the next two innings.
Junior Paige Savage went three for three and scored twice out of the lead-off spot in the MVC line-up, while three batters in the bottom of the order -- junior Jennifer Palmatory, Lopez and senior Marisol Espinoza -- each had three hits and combined for four runs and three RBIs.
Cobern allowed only five hits in the nightcap, Valley breaking open a 1-1 stalemate with a seven-run barrage in the top of the eighth. Espinoza, Savage, Kerns and junior Mallory White had RBI singles and junior Esperanza Rothwell contributed a two-run double.
Junior Katie Payne had three hits and drove in two runs during the twinbill for the Lady Spartans (23-8), who had won 14 of their previous 15 games.
Savage finished the day with six hits and three runs scored to pace the Lady Vikings (9-11), who return to Heart of America Conference action today at Culver-Stockton.
