LAMONI, Iowa -- The Missouri Valley College softball teams were nipped in a pair of one-run Heart of America Conference games Saturday at Graceland, 2-1 and 1-0. The Lady Yellowjackets won both contests on runs scored during their final at-bats.
Graceland scored in the bottom of the second inning of the opener on freshman Cheryl Iddings' homer run, but junior Kim Lopez answered for the Lady Vikings with a solo shot in the third.
Lopez tossed three shutout innings for Valley, but the Lady 'Jackets broke through in the bottom of the sixth on singles by senior Brittany Peterson and sophomore Brianna Douglas.
The nightcap was scoreless until the Graceland sixth, senior Janie Jungermann allowing only one hit until junior Alyssa Smith singled. Peterson's sacrifice fly brought in the game-winning run.
Junior Alyssa Greenstreet and senior Christina Bradley, the winner of the first game, teamed up on a four-hit shutout for Graceland (13-12, 4-0 HAAC).
The Lady Vikings (7-11, 2-2) were held to seven hits on the day, two each by Lopez and junior Esperanza Rothwell. They head to Culver-Stockton for a league doubleheader Tuesday.
